Learn Everything You Need to Know About The Great Outdoors!

Finance - Can You Speak The Language?

Wednesday, Sept. 12
1:00 - 4:00 PM
CU South Denver
10035 South Peoria Street
Lone Tree, CO 80134

The workshop is $225 and will teach you to navigate and actively participate in financial conversations, how to assess performance and make sound business decisions, and help you master basic terminology and skills.

We’ve all heard it before - knowledge is power. Knowledge allows you to see situations from fresh perspectives, excel in your job and continue to grow in your career. With 20.3 million Americans working in the professional and business services, increased knowledge is paramount, and apparently, financial knowledge is lacking among many non-finance professionals.

A 2009 study put out by the U.S. Treasury found that adults’ financial acumen is only slightly higher than that of a high school students’. In fact, when tested on their financial literacy, adults
only earned a “C” letter grade, barely passing in the eyes of U.S. education.

Why is it so necessary to be well-versed in the language of finance? Financial skills strengthen business leadership and are required competencies for managers and their accompanying organizations. According to Nicholas Martin, CPA, “Mastering basic financial concepts enables you to make quick and sound decisions.” He states that “pursuing these skills while understanding how your department impacts the organization is an indispensable criterion for success both in your personal growth and that of your organization.” Without financial acumen, you are at high risk for failing. Martin claims that it is “vital for a business professional to be able to communicate efficiently and effectively; the foundation of that communication begins with basic financial literacy.” For a company to be successful, every single employee must fully understand what is making the company money.

Do you have the ability to converse with confidence in financial discussions at work? Martin is hosting an entire workshop on building your financial acumen.

Come Hear the Riveting Firsthand Experience of a 9/11 Survivor.

Wednesday, September 19
6:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Douglas County Libraries, Castle Pines
360 Village Square Lane
Castle Pines, CO 80108

Our country came together as one nation following the events on September 11th. Come hear the riveting firsthand account of one survivor’s experience!

On September 11, 2001, Ken Greene was an Assistant Director of Aviation for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. He was in his World Trade Center office on the 65th floor of the north tower when the first aircraft struck twenty-five floors above. Ken and his team fled for their safety, and while in the stairwell escaping the north tower, the south tower was also struck by an aircraft.

Ken stayed behind to assist with the evacuation, and during this timeframe the south tower collapsed, burying him and others in the debris. Fortunately, he was rescued by a fireman less than five minutes before the north tower collapsed. He will join us to tell his story, and recount the events of the day.

Mr. Greene recently retired as the Chief Operating Officer of Denver International Airport. He joined the airport in 2009.
