What VALUE Does the Chamber Bring to YOUR Business? Josh Walker We have been spending a good amount of time visiting with business owners throughout the community. Some owners are familiar with the chamber, but a lot of them are unsure as to what the chamber can do to help their business succeed and reach their goals. Here is a sampling of some of the questions that often come up during these meetings: What are the benefits of joining the American Fork Chamber of Commerce? How much time is required for membership? How much does it cost to be a member of the chamber? What’s in it for me? There are a wide variety of reasons that businesses join the chamber. One business might want help with marketing while another wants to be more involved in the community, and yet another wants to network with other business owners. The list goes on and on. We recently read a survey that talked about measurable VALUE that chambers provide to businesses. Here is just a small sampling from the survey: Most consumers (59%) think that being active in the local chamber of commerce is an effective business strategy overall. It is 29% more effective, however, for communicating to consumers that a company uses good business practices and 26% more effective for communicating that a business is reputable. If a company shows that it is highly involved in its local chamber (e.g., sits on the chamber board), consumers are 12% more likely to think that its products stack up better against its competition. When a consumer thinks that a company’s products stack up better against the competition because the company is highly involved in its local chamber of commerce, it is because he or she infers that the company is trustworthy, involved in the community, and is an industry leader. When consumers know that a small business is a member of the chamber of commerce, they are 44% more likely to think favorably of it and 63% more likely to purchase goods or services from the company in the future. Craig is a native of California. In 1991 he moved to Utah County to attend BYU. In 1994, he graduated from the Y with a degree in Management from the Marriott School. That same year he started a business in structural steel fabrication engineering, from a business plan he created in a senior year entrepreneurship class. In 2007, Craig began consulting with public charter schools in Utah. He sits on the board of the Utah Charter Network, a not-for-profit statewide organization providing training, consulting, and legislative affairs for charter schools’ governing boards, administrators and teachers. Currently, Craig owns a small business, consulting with educators, the tech industry and political entities. As a member of the Utah State House of Representatives, Craig represented the people of District 57, which included American Fork, Pleasant Grove and Cedar Hills, from 2003-2010 and 2012. He served on the House Business and Labor Committee, as the Vice-chairman of House Revenue and Taxation Committee (with Chairman John Dougall), and as the Chairman of the House Government Operations Committee (primarily focused on elections issues). He served on several national legislative committees, including an assignment with the Council of State Governments, as well as the National Conference of State Legislators. During 2015-2017, Craig was elected to serve as the volunteer Chairman of the Utah County Republican Party. Craig is married to Kim. They love Utah County and live in Lehi. They are the parents of four adult children. He recently became a grandpa for the first time. He loves to scuba dive. He also loves to hike in Utah’s mountains.
