About Altadena Heritage
Altadena Heritage
Altadena Heritage, established in the mid-1980s, is a nonprofit, volunteer-driven organization committed to safeguarding and promoting the rich architectural, environmental, and cultural heritage of Altadena, California. Recognizing the absence of protective ordinances for unincorporated areas in Los Angeles County, a dedicated group of residents formed the organization to address the imminent threat of losing historically significant homes and properties to redevelopment. Their proactive efforts led to the creation of Altadena's Community Standards District (CSD), which established building codes to preserve the unique character and livability of the community.
Over the years, Altadena Heritage has remained steadfast in its mission, evolving its strategies to meet the community's changing needs while staying true to its foundational goals. The organization has undertaken significant projects, including a comprehensive survey of Altadena's architectural resources, becoming one of the first in California to digitize such information. This initiative has resulted in a publicly accessible archive, serving as a valuable resource for research and education. Through advocacy, educational programs, and community engagement, Altadena Heritage continues to foster a deep appreciation for the town's distinctive heritage, ensuring its preservation for future generations.
