Small Business Saturday Events/Activities

Small Business Saturday is right around the corner; literally. November 30 is coming up quick and the Chamber has been asked if we are doing anything surrounding it. While we don't have any official events that are taking place that day, there are a couple of things we are doing to help promote the entire season of shopping and tourism here in Boulder City.

Over the past few months, we have been more proactive with local events and activities, setting up Facebook events three months ahead of when they happen. This has blown our Facebook reach completely out of the water as several of our events (Halloween and Christmas namely) have had thousands respond. Trunk or Treat was our biggest yet; almost doubling in attendance from the previous year. (More about that later) We are leveraging these events to promote Boulder City and have created an event for Shop Small Saturday Here businesses are welcome to post their events, specials, deals, or activities that they are hosting at their place of business for November 30. You are welcome to post once your specials, deals, and so on, only once please as we don't want to spam our followers. On Black Friday (Nov 29) we will compile a list of businesses from this event and make a post on our regular Facebook page  tagging the businesses that have posts in the event. This is the best way to increase your own social media reach as well as leveraging the following (currently 3,000) we have on our page.

Jill and I (Monica) are planning on visiting a few businesses on Shop Small Saturday, going live from each location we visit to help showcase businesses and the happenings around town. The Annual Christmas events are the following weekend and we are expecting a LARGE turnout to the Tree Lighting, Doodlebug and Santa's Picture Party, and Santa's Electric Night Parade this year due to the high response we have received on our various events. Please be prepared and we HIGHLY suggest you stay open a bit later to capture locals and tourists that may want to shop on the weekend of December 6th and 7th. And if you'd like to run any specials that weekend or have activities planned at your place of business, let us know so we can help you promote it! The Best Dam Wine Walk is the 14th and again, we are expecting higher than usual attendance to that as well since it's the Ugly Sweater Walk. Even if you're not a regular stop on the Wine Walk, we HIGHLY suggest you stay open later to capture the activity happening around town!

HR Tip of the Week: Two Emerging HR Compliance Issues You Need to Know About

One of the most challenging aspects of small business is the lack of Human Resource support out there. Large companies often have an HR department that handles all of the human resource related issues, like recruiting, hiring, training, and firing. But for small businesses, that responsibility most likely falls onto the owner. The more information you're armed with as a small buisiness owner, the more likely you are to keep your business out of legal troubles regarding your employees. And with HR related laws changing almost monthly, we want to make sure you are educated and aware of any issues that impact small business.

The top two HR related trends of 2019 have been identified via ADP. They are ....

Small Business Saturday Resources FREE

Here are some great free resources courtesy of American Express! Make sure you grab your social media graphics and downloadable tools! Partner with other businesses in the area to create a 'passport' of sorts, encouraging customers to visit various businesses for a stamp or punch. Stay open a bit later during the holiday season and leverage events! One of the biggest pieces of feedback we hear from visitors and locals is "I wanted to go to (insert name of business) but they were closed!" What other thoughts do you have about leveraging the additional traffic during the holidays? Join the conversation over in our members only Facebook group!

Keep Your Eye on the Community Calendar

Did you know the calendar that is on our website is considered the "Boulder City Community Calendar"? We manage all of the events for members, investors, non-profits, businesses, organizations, and anyone can submit an event. If you have something going on that you want the community to know about, consider posting it on the calendar. The link to the calendar is shared in our newsletters, on our cover pages on social media, and on a monthly basis on our social channels. See what's happening here
