A Boulder Christmas 2020 ~ Events for the Season

Our amazing community will come together this holiday season with “A Boulder Christmas 2020”.   It will have a different feel to the events and activities due to our desire to be safe and healthy.  This will drive a different feel in our hearts as we join together to do the right thing in this season, find our families to be the center of our focus, and choose to support our local businesses and community in making this A Boulder Christmas 2020.

This year, we will find many smaller gatherings and specially designed events that will take into consideration the Governor’s current Directives and event approvals by his appointed Emergency Operations Committee at the County level.  Our local City Officials, as part of the County EOC, have been working to find ways that we might be able to alter our traditional events to a scalable size that could be approved by the County EOC.  Their suggestions have been reviewed by several organizations and local event organizers to see if the adapted event could still be viable options for them to produce.   We are finding that this year’s holiday festivities will be translated into many smaller scaled activities spanning over the entire holiday season, versus the traditional single weekend of large-scale events.

“No one is more disappointed in knowing we won’t be able to welcome Santa, Jingle Cat, and friends for the wonderful holiday events that we have all come to love and enjoy for many years.  However, we are grateful that so many local volunteers, event organizers, and City Staff are willing to brainstorm on alternate ways to still support our local businesses, find fun ways for families to safely celebrate Christmas in BC, and remember what is most important in our lives during this very special time of year”, stated Chamber CEO Jill Lagan.   “Knowing we have to make adaptations based on what can be approved during the Governor’s Directives, the Chamber staff and Board of Directors have made an investment in an App that will provide a new way to Discover, Explore and Unwind in Boulder City.  Not only will we be promoting all the activities and events that will still be allowed, but we will also be featuring our local businesses that will have special holiday displays, extended hours for shopping and dining, and any special discounts for their products and services.  Several businesses will be holding their own holiday activities and special programs from Thanksgiving to the New Year and we will be hosting that information, at no charge to our businesses, so that we can help drive guests into their front doors.  This will help our local merchants as well as provide fun-family festivities for our residents and guests that come to Boulder City each year to find phenomenal gifts and decor, receive great customer service while dining, and wonderful memories of their experience in our community.”

Santa’s Electric Night Parade Director Mike Pacini and his committee worked hard to try and find a way to have the famous parade in a manner that could be approved and was safe for all attending and displaying.  What could be approved at the County level was a “drive-thru” concept where the floats and parade entries that normally drive past spectators sitting along the City’s main street, would instead be a static display along the street and the spectators would remain in their vehicles and drive past the participating holiday floats and organizational entries.   Many thought this would still be a great compromise and moved forward to see if past parade entries would be interested in this concept.  Without those displays to drive past, there would be no parade.  Unfortunately, the survey of those past entries proved the committee’s fear that there was little interest in participating this year under these parameters, therefore leaving the Chamber’s planning committee to make the very disappointing decision to not hold the Christmas Parade for the first time in over 30 years.

Mike has always been known to want to find a solution and worked with the Chamber CEO to find other options for families on this very traditional night in Boulder City.   “A Boulder Christmas 2020” was born and led to the planning and sharing of the app that will spotlight businesses through the entire community all month long, a special Virtual Lighting of Boulder City’s Christmas House and Community Christmas Tree with a special holiday program performed by local celebrities that can be viewed online and on BCTV all month long, as well as a long list of other activities happening around town.   The Chamber leadership thanks Mike and his loyal volunteers for their efforts in finding solutions with the ultimate goal of safe family experiences in mind.

“The City has gone to great lengths to keep our infection rate low over the past eight months through thoughtful planning, providing timely information and taking necessary precautions to protect our residents,” said Fire Chief Will Gray, Incident Commander of Boulder City’s COVID-19 response. “We respect the Boulder City Chamber of Commerce and its Board for putting the health and safety of residents first.”

“We invite any business owner that is offering a special discount, has extended holiday hours, or fabulous holiday display to let us know at the Chamber office so that we can add them to the A Boulder Christmas 2020 app.  We will promote and share that app with the public locally and in the Vegas Valley in real-time, keeping it updated daily,” suggests Jill Lagan.  The Chamber will also be offering an I-Map feature on their website that will provide a list of the local residents’ addresses that will have their homes decorated for the season and would like to be on a “drive-by” map of Boulder City.   In years past, there have been efforts in coordinating lists of homes that “all should see”.  This new I-map feature will function as the clearinghouse list of all the “must-see” homes in BC.

In looking forward, all of Boulder City (leaders, organizations, businesses, and residents) want to see a return of the traditional events that we have all come to love and support.  However, the Chamber of Commerce staff, Board of Directors, and event directors truly appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding in this very unusual time in our World.  No one could have fought more to provide the holiday activities we had hoped to have in some way shape or form.  We do thank you all in advance for supporting the smaller events and activities that have been designed for your entertainment and family fun with A Boulder Christmas 2020.  Let us all celebrate the many good things we do have in our lives at this time and know that there is already a large team making plans and working to produce great events and fun experiences for the residents and guests of Boulder City in 2021.
