Biggby's 10 Year Anniversary in Coldwater

On Sunday, September 30th Biggby Coffee will be celebrating their 10 year anniversary in Coldwater, MI.  Thank you Biggby for being such an involved and active small business in our community!

2nd Story Marketing

With the number of people working from home increasing due to online access, and the option for companies to cut cost of unnecessary dedicated workspace, the idea of co-working space is among one of the largest trends in the business world today.  Embracing the trend in downtown Coldwater, business owners Courtney Dirschell and Hillary Eley realized they too, had some extra space to offer at their business, 2nd Story Marketing and have opened a new Share the Good Co-Working Space adjacent to their current office.

After their expansion last year above Airway Oxygen, the business owners realized this would be a perfect place to invite other freelance, remote employees, start up companies, entrepreneurs, and self-employed people to to come together to create a productive place for working socially.   "This is a growing trend and we're excited to offer it in downtown Coldwater," said Dirschell.  "It's a great use of space and an opportunity to connect with others who don't always want to work from a home-setting."  In the past, these people may have worked in noisy coffee shops, cluttered home offices, or isolated basement offices. Now they can work and socialize in this creative space in the heart of downtown Coldwater.  Members can rent the space on a monthly basis, for a cost much lower than traditional office space.

The Share the Good Co-Working Space opened on September 1.  This space will be available for those that are interested in office space with access to wifi, conference room, and a kitchen area.  2nd Story Marketing has been in business since 2013, providing marketing services to mulit-million dollar companies, as well as small local businesses.

"We want our co-working environment to benefit individuals looking for a place to work, network, and host meetings without having to pay for a traditional office in a downtown setting," said Eley. "We often get people saying that they want to come work with us, and here is their opportunity."  2nd Story prides themselves on creating a laid-back, comfortable culture, coffee house-like setting for their staff and their clients to work.

2nd Story Marketing is located at 49A W. Chicago St. in downtown Coldwater.  For more information or to schedule a tour of the co-working space go to their website at 2ndStoryMarketing.net

Blue Ox Credit Union

BlueOx Credit Union is Driven to Support Goodwill’s Wheels to Work Program

BATTLE CREEK, MI (Sept. 27, 2018) – Colin Powell once noted, “The best method to overcoming obstacles is the team method.”  BlueOx Credit Union is choosing teamwork to assist with community transportation barriers by donating $500 to Goodwill Industries of Central Michigan’s Heartland’s Wheels to Work program.

“BlueOx Credit Union has chosen to support the Wheels to Work program because safe, reliable transportation helps support individual employment,” BlueOx President/CEO, Fran Godfrey said.  “We often partner with other groups throughout our community to drive volunteerism, contributions and donations, embracing the credit union philosophy of people helping people,” Godfrey said.

Ken Bauer, President/CEO of Goodwill Industries of Central Michigan’s Heartland, noted the Wheels to Work program is a vehicle donation program designed to provide low-cost, road-worthy transportation to qualified individuals. “The lack of reliable transportation can be a significant barrier to maintaining employment. Goodwill believes in Changing Lives Through the Power of Work, so whatever supports are provided toward that end are certainly beneficial,” said Bauer.

Solid transportation was highlighted in BlueOx Credit Union’s “Driven” auto loan campaign, which offered loans as low as 2.50% APR, along with $100 bonus cash, a free auto club membership and a chance to win one of six Emergency Vehicle Kits, each valued at $250.

Goodwill Industries of Central Michigan’s Heartland is a private, Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) accredited, nonprofit organization that has been serving the community since the 1953. Goodwill assists individuals with barriers to employment experience the power of work.

Representing $172 million in assets, BlueOx Credit Union is a state-chartered, federally insured credit union, with membership open to individuals within seventeen counties in lower Michigan. To find out how you can join BlueOx Credit Union, visit BlueOXcu.org.

Your Chamber Membership-Cost-Justified

EVERY business, every non-profit, every organization in this community should examine its cost-justification in relation to becoming a part of the Coldwater Area Chamber of Commerce.

If you are already a member, you have probably done this exercise, and concluded that being a member of this business organization returns your business more than the $23/month it costs to belong.

If you haven’t become a member, let’s cost-justify it now.

As a Chamber member, your organization demonstrates that it supports other businesses, champions the community, is a team player, and wants to be a part of a growing economy.  What’s that worth to your business?

Why should you commit that $23/month?  Because membership in the local chamber offers numerous benefits and keeps business owners on top of important, ever-changing issues and trends within their community and local marketplace.  You must take advantage of available opportunities in order to earn a return, but the returns are there.

AND, research points out that consumers are more likely to do business with a company if it’s a member of their local chamber of commerce.  What’s that worth?

According a research study by The Shapiro Group, Inc. and Market Street Services, when potential customers know that a small business is a local-Chamber member, they are 44 percent more likely to view that business positively; and, 63 percent more likely to buy goods or services from the company.

Still don’t have the money or the time?  Consider the following:
  • Most consumers (59 percent) think that being active in the local chamber of commerce is a positive business strategy.  And, 26 percent find that Chamber membership adds positive impact to a business’ reputation.
  • If a company shows that it’s highly involved in its local chamber (e.g., sits on the Chamber board, works as an ambassador, or volunteers), consumers are 12 percent more likely to think that its products stack up better against its competition.  It conveys a feeling that the member-company is trustworthy, is involved in the community, and is an industry leader.
  • A couple of study examples listed were that if consumers know that a restaurant franchise is a member of the chamber of commerce, they are 40 percent more likely to eat at the franchise in the next few months.  And, if those consumers know that an insurance company is a member of the chamber of commerce, they are 43 percent more likely to consider choosing that company.

Still not ready to join us?

Let’s talk about community for a moment.  Why should we support other business-owners?  If the entire community is more successful, vibrant, profitable, isn’t that good for your business?   And, working with, and networking with, other business people who are like-minded in their support of community must be a benefit for your business.

In my business, like most, I’m much more successful, if I can help other businesses that I work with to be more successful.  Why wouldn’t I want to do that?

If every area-business joined the Chamber, we’d have more resource to effect more positive results.  We’d have a bigger network to enhance each of our businesses.  We’d have a larger pool of expertise to draw from and to share.  And, we’d have financial advantages that would allow us to take on more projects, more education, more support in a variety of areas, and to have more impact in the community.

The Chamber can be a tool that can effect change, and enhance business, as well as impact other areas in the community.  It seems like $23/month is a good investment.  Why not call the Chamber office today, 517/278-5985, or email the Chamber office today at info@coldwaterchamber.com to get involved?

Can you afford not to make that investment in yourself, your business, and your community?

Consumers Energy Kicks Off Battery Storage Era
At Western Michigan University

Battery Research Project Will Support the Company’s Clean Energy Plan

KALAMAZOO, Mich., Sept. 17, 2018 – Consumers Energy today ushered in a new technology on the campus of Western Michigan University, starting operation of a new large-scale battery that should store enough energy to power 1,000 homes at any time.

The Parkview Battery Project is the first large-scale project of its kind by Consumers Energy and is part of the company’s Clean Energy Plan.
“Advances in battery storage technology have now reached the scale that they power entire communities on demand,” said Tim Sparks, Consumers Energy’s vice president of electric grid integration. “Our Clean Energy Plan calls for more solar and wind electric generation facilities that will depend on battery storage to be dependable sources of energy for our customers for when the wind isn’t blowing or the sun shining. The Parkview Battery Project begins the next groundbreaking chapter in the story about how clean and reliable energy reaches Consumers Energy customers.”
Western Michigan University president Ed Montgomery, local legislators and county commissioners joined Consumers Energy employees who worked on the project at a ribbon cutting ceremony on Western’s campus.
The Parkview battery site was selected through a statewide search in consultation with Michigan State University (MSU). Over the next year, Consumers Energy and MSU consultants will study data generated at the new battery facility to better the potential for battery storage use around the state. Western Michigan University engineering students will also have opportunities to participate in partnerships with Consumers Energy on electric battery research and operations.
The 1 megawatt (MW) battery’s output is about the amount of electricity used by approximately 1,000 residential electric customers in an hour. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, about 867 MW of utility-scale battery capacity exists in the United States based on technology similar to the Parkview battery. Large-scale batteries can support wind and solar plant electric production when declining winds and clouds reduce their output for short periods and could threaten their reliability.
“The foundation of all we do at Consumers Energy focuses on our Triple Bottom Line: people, the planet and Michigan’s prosperity. We are excited to launch this project and see how it will provide future benefits for our customers as we continue to develop responsible and environmentally friendly electric generation and storage facilities,” Sparks said.
Consumers Energy, Michigan’s largest energy provider, is the principal subsidiary of CMS Energy (NYSE: CMS), providing natural gas and/or electricity to 6.7 million of the state’s 10 million residents in all 68 Lower Peninsula counties.

Tibbits Opera House

Experience the thrill of witnessing giant masterpieces being created before your eyes in mere moments and join the challenge to see if you can guess what is being created. Artrageous artists use bold colors with hands and brushes as they are inspired by the troupe’s vocalists, musicians and dancers as they race to complete the paintings before the last note.

The Artrageous Experience is high energy, inclusive, full of mystery and pure fun! For the first time on one stage, the Fine Arts meet the Performing arts. Artrageous is a totally unique concept that invites community and a sense of togetherness as the whole show culminates in a one of a kind Live Arts Installation at the end of each concert. Audiences interact with the gallery, the performers and even add their own art.

All the fun of just about every TV-show genre you can imagine is jam-packed into this wild and fast-paced comedy!  You will become the live studio audience on a talk show, Real Talk with Fairytale Legends, where the seven dwarves tell the story of Snow White. Each new dwarf takes a turn telling part of Snow White’s famous story in his or her own unique voice. At any given moment, the story can be anything — romance, comedy, home improvement show, suspense, Western, epic poetry, mystery, cooking show, stand-up routine, or blockbuster action movie!  There’s even a “Miss Fairest of Them All” beauty pageant!  It all culminates in a mad-dash ending of fast-changing genres that sets the record straight on Snow White’s happily-ever-after.

Tibbits Young Audiences produces two shows yearly with a full cast of about 50 students. A play in the fall and a musical in the spring provide students an enjoyable introduction to the world of theatre. By putting on a show they learn teamwork, discipline, theatre skills, self-confidence and an appreciation for the arts. Shows are open to youth in fourth through eighth grade.
