Community Leaders

Branch County Community Foundation - Member Spotlight of the Week!

The Branch County Community Foundation is a non-profit (501(c)(3)) dedicated to improving the quality of life in the communities of Branch County and Colon, Michigan.
The Community Foundation was established in 1991 by a group of individuals that connected from local Rotary clubs who saw the need for a Community Foundation supported by donors throughout the community. The Community Foundation’s mission is to promote community philanthropy, building endowments and other charitable funds, and connecting community resources.

The Community Foundation offers professional services and the place to begin for people who want to work together to create strong prosperous communities. Our endowments are preserved, invested, and managed to assure a steady stream of income for grants to organizations that serve our community.

One of the most meaningful gifts we can give this time of year to our children, loved ones, friends, and neighbors is the commitment to work together to help build a better world.  The spirit of the holiday giving season should not only be about consumerism, but community as well.

It’s not too late to have a positive impact on your community this year!  You can easily give to one or more causes you care about through a single gift of check or stock. We’d be happy to talk to you about where your gift can do the most good or just give you more information about the Community Foundation and the work we do.  There is so much more we would like you to know! Visit our website at www.BrCoFoundation.org, contact by phone at 517-278-4517, or email us at info@BrCoFoundation.org and we can talk about what you’d like to do for your community.

Coldwater Schools of Hope Reading Program

This is a United Way of Branch County program that has a goal of assisting elementary students to reach grade level reading. It is a one on one tutoring program of second grade students who are not reading at grade level. This program is a partnership with the Branch County United Way, The Great Start Collaborative, Coldwater Community Schools and the Kiwanis Club of Coldwater as the community partner.

The tutoring program was developed in response to legislation enacted by the state legislature requiring that third grade students are reading at grade level before advancing to fourth grade. The four partners came together to engage the Coldwater community in response to this need.

You can participate as a volunteer tutor and make a difference in a child’s life. A tutor meets with a student on a weekly basis for 30 minutes. During that time the student will read, and you will aid in vocabulary, pronunciation, and comprehension.

Each tutor receives training, tutor tools and support to be successful. The results for the program in the last two years has been impressive. Over 85% of the students participating and receiving the tutoring has reached or is only slightly below grade level reading. In the last year the group of dedicated tutors had over 1,000 hours of volunteer hours on the project.

Join us and be a part of something that is fun, meaningful and rewarding.

Contact us at coldwaterschoolsofhope@gmail.com, call the United Way of Branch County at 279-7129, or Jefferson Elementary at 279-5970.
