Consumers Energy

In January, Consumers Energy announced our first “Put Your Town on the Map” competition – an effort to strengthen rural communities with grants that will energize towns in the Lower Peninsula.

We’re pleased to announce that a project in Quincy has been selected as one of the 10 finalists.

The Village of Quincy is proposing the development of Market 1858, a pop-up retail market. Officials will be making their pitch to be chosen as the winning project on April 17 at the 2019 Small Town and Rural Development Conference in Thompsonville, Mich.

Consumers Energy will provide $7,500 to the winning project, with runners-up receiving $5,000 and $2,500. Our hope is that the funding – and attention now being paid to the finalists – will provide important momentum to make these projects a reality.

Branch County Community Foundation

Your Community Foundation
Changing Needs and New Opportunities

The Branch County Community Foundation knows the importance of preparing for financial support for our community 10, 20, 100 years from now.  To do that we need to raise dollars that can support needs we can’t even imagine today.  We currently hold over 130 separate accounts, what we call funds, most of which donors set up to support particular causes or organizations.  Donations to these funds are essential to our ability to meet the needs of our communities.   The Community Foundation currently holds two funds created for donations that aren’t allocated to any specific cause or program.

We call these types of donations “unrestricted”.  When donors are interested in making sure their gifts can be used for anything that improves the quality of life in our serve area, they make an “unrestricted gift”.  Unrestricted gifts have the broadest impact on the community because they can affect so many aspects of a vibrant community now and far into the future.  Originally named the General Fund, the Forever Fund was created in 1994 by our visionary board of directors to hold unrestricted donations and make grants to meet emerging needs for all of Branch County.  The Colon Foundation Fund is the other unrestricted fund designated for programs and projects that improve life in the Colon area.

Right now the Branch County Community Foundation is actively working to increase the size of the Forever Fund through our annual Forever Fund Campaign.  This way the Forever Fund can award more grants for any project or program that improves the quality of life in Branch County and support the Community Foundation’s work toward that goal.  With support from the Forever Fund, the Community Foundation is able to participate in many local and regional groups focusing on workforce training, access to childcare and transportation, affordable housing and homelessness prevention, early childhood education, preserving our land, economic development, and much more.

Through the Forever Fund, any individual, family, or business can be involved in philanthropy! There is an opportunity for every budget size.  Anyone interested is supporting their community now and forever should contact the Community Foundation about giving to the Forever Fund or creating a new unrestricted fund.

There’s so much more we’d like you to know!  To learn more, you can contact us at 517-278-4517 or info@BrCoFoundation.org.

Perennial Landscae Co. - Member Spotlight of the Week

This week's Coldwater Area Chamber of Commerce "Member Spotlight of the Week" recognition is going out to Perennial Landscaping Co. of Coldwater.  Read more below on why Owners/Operators/Brothers Sam and Elijah Heminger feel that they deserve this week's Spotlight!

We began landscaping in Seattle Washington in 2006 and fell in love with it. With the both of us being outdoors enthusiasts and in love with nature it was an easy career choice for us.  The idea that we can use our imaginations to create a scene and environment that will make someone happy and smile every time they pull up to their home, or walk through their yard makes us extremely happy. After all, it's the gateway to your home before you enter the door. Whether it is pruning a Japanese maple, building a retaining wall and patio, or sprucing up an existing landscape, we find the work very rewarding. Although Seattle offers a bounty of landscaping opportunities the one thing that it didn’t have for us was our family. And so after many years of the big city, we both eventually made our way back to our home town of Coldwater, MI to raise our children around the rest of their family. We have had this dream of owning our own landscaping company for many of years now and because of the encouragement from our wives/friends/family, Perennial Landscaping Co. was born in the Spring of 2018.

We are more than happy to work with our customers on special/custom projects.  You can contact us via Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/perenniallandscapeco/ or you can reach us via email at perenniallandscapeco@gmail.com.

Come visit our website today at https://www.perenniallandscapeco.com/ to see some of our work!

The City of Coldwater - New Revolving Loan Fund

LOCAL INCENTIVES FOR DOWNTOWN DEVELOPMENT
The City of Coldwater, together with Century Bank and Trust, Southern Michigan Bank and Trust, Downtown Development Authority (DDA), and Branch County Economic Growth Alliance (BCEGA) are taking significant steps to advance economic development efforts in downtown Coldwater. Building owners who commit to investing in their properties, including their façades, could benefit from the assistance of a Low Interest Loan Pool and Rebate Program.
Approved projects can apply for access to the low interest loan pool, offering below market interest rates. Century Bank and Trust and Southern Michigan Bank and Trust have together designated $800,000 toward the low interest loan program. In addition, a rebate program will be offered through the DDA, directly reimbursing a percentage of the costs to investors upon completion of approved projects. $10,000 has been made available annually by the DDA to fund the rebate program.
Applications for both the low interest loans and the rebates will soon be available online at www.coldwater.org or by contacting Economic Development Assistant Audrey Tappenden at 517-279-6913.

LOAN FUNDS AVAILABLE FOR COMMUNITY MINDED ENTREPRENEURS:
Coldwater Regional Revolving Loan Fund

What is RRLF: The Regional Revolving Loan Fund comes from state funds given to communities. It serves start up and growing businesses that generally might not qualify for tradition financing. The loans require that for every $35,000 loaned out, 1 full time equivalent job is created. It also supports businesses that want to restore blighted buildings or slums.

Why it Matters: Every time a loan is paid back, it grows the fund! That means more money for development in our community. This loan is administered through Northern Initiatives, which means every loan customer gets access to business coaching services along with 100's of online business resources to grow their business. Money and Know How - every loan customer receives both.

Who is Northern Initiatives: We are a non-profit Community Development Financial Institution that provides our loan customers with money and know-how. That means that our customers are not only provided with funding, but also access to our business services. These services include business coaching, and access to Initiate our online business resource with over 100 interactive tools, templates, videos, and guides. We provide training in money, marketing and management. To learn more about us go to:
