HHSI & BGHS Merge to Become BHcare (01/01/12)
The merger to form BHcare will be effective January 1, 2012, bringing together two strong organizations with essential and complementary programs, including mental health, addiction and prevention services, and domestic violence services. The two private, non-profit corporations will be gradually transitioned over to a single organization during 2012, in order to maintain continuity in client service delivery and minimize disruption in operations. BHcare will continue to operate from the two primary locations that have been occupied by Birmingham Group Health Services in Ansonia and Harbor Health Services in Branford.
Presidents & CEOs, Roberta Cook of HHSI and Marilyn Cormack of BGHS, will continue to lead BHcare and the transition team forming the new, comprehensive behavioral health and domestic violence services organization.
About Us
The mission of BHcare is to provide accessible and comprehensive behavioral health, prevention and domestic violence services.
BHcare is designated by the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services as the Local Mental Health Authority for the Shoreline towns of Branford, East Haven, Guilford, Madison, North Branford and North Haven, and the Valley Towns of Ansonia, Derby, Oxford, Seymour and Shelton. BHcare provides wraparound services for more than 3000 adults who are struggling with mental health issues and/or substance addiction. BHcare provides domestic violence services for more than 9,000 individuals each year, and prevention services for 5,000+ each year.
BHcare operates a variety of behavioral health programs including an adult outpatient program, and intensive outpatient program, an outreach/mobile crisis, and a jail diversion program. We provide case management, social rehabilitation, employment services, and a wide and expanding range of residential services, including scattered-site supported apartments, a group home (staffed 24/7) and a supervised apartment and respite program (staffed 24/7). BHcare is the largest housing provider for adults with serious mental illness in our service area. In addition to its behavioral health programs, the agency also sponsors a volunteer-run clothing bank, runs the Center for Domestic Violence Services and the Greater Valley Substance Abuse Action Council.
BHcare is fully licensed and has been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities since 1998.
