About Us
the Community Performance Process
Crooked Rivers Cultural Heritage Folklife Productions are a form of "Community Performance." It's a fairly new genre of theatrical production designed to bring the community together. Our goal is 100 percent inclusion. Everyone who wants to participate is given a part. Therefore, we don't hold auditions (where the best actor for each part is selected); we hold "gatherings" of people who are interested in being part of the show - no one is turned away. Ideally, there will be two or three people cast in each character part, and then they share the limelight when the performances come around.
After the Gatherings, we begin rehearsals - usually 2-4 times per week, depending on what you end up doing in the show. We understand that sometimes life gets in the way of really important stuff (like Crooked Rivers) and you may miss a rehearsal occasionally. Hopefully, you'll be having so much fun, you will strive to be present 100 percent of the time.
There will be music and dancing. That's a given. Some may say, "I don't sing" or "I don't dance." That's okay. I can't tell you how many times we've heard that at the gatherings. But by the time the performance dates have arrived, there they are up there on the stage, singing and dancing with everyone else. It's not about being good, it's about being welcome - and enjoying time spent with friends who have become like family.
