Chamber Week

Rick Hernandez

We are almost half way through the year and we are not done celebrating our 100 Year Anniversary! We had a great time at our Annual Meeting with Bobby Plump and all of you. The many stories shared by Mr. Plump truly captivated the crowd while providing interesting information for us to learn from. Thank you to everyone who attended and was part of such a memorable event.

Moving forward, we are preparing for our Chamber Week scheduled for June 26-29. We have many activities lined up for you and our community members.

Tuesday, June 26- We have partnered with the Montgomery County Carnegie Museum to display some of the significant Chamber events and accomplishments throughout our 100 years of existence.

Wednesday, June 27- We have partnered with the Montgomery County Civic Band to play 1918 era music under the gazebo of the Lane Place. You don't want to miss out on the many jazz pieces being played that night. Friends and family members are welcome to attend.

Thursday, June 28- To reflect on our community and member supporters who have invested so much of their time and money in us, we’ll be celebrating with the many great investors and supporters by spotlighting their involvement while also giving away various prizes to our community members.

Friday, June 29- The Chamber will be hosting our annual golf scramble at the Crawfordsville Country Club. Please make plans to attend and be part of this great event. With all this celebrating, you will not want to miss out on any of these events.

As your Chamber, we look to support and be a resource for your business needs. Please visit our website, www.crawfordsvillechamber.com, for the latest events and news in what is happening through your local chamber. We are grateful for your support and participation in all we do.

Leadership Academy

Lynn Ringis

The MCLA is very proud of our Ascent Program. This program was specifically designed to address the workforce deficit in our community. Students are nominated by school teachers and/or staff members at the end of their Freshman year. The three-year program focuses on job readiness (soft skills) and leadership skills as well as community awareness and engagement.

Two years ago we started out with twelve students. In the fall of 2018 we will have more than 35 participants. We use a revolving curriculum for years one and two. Third year students (Seniors) will use the skills they have learned to complete a service project of their choosing.

There is no cost to the students to participate so we are constantly seeking out business partners who are interested in helping us build a quality pool of potential employees right here in Montgomery County. We would also like to hear about internship opportunities that could be extended to these students.

We would like to congratulate our first two graduates, Owen Zimmerman and Caleb Ringis, both from Southmont. Owen spent a semester working as an intern with the Montgomery County EMA, which he credits to a connection made during the Ascent Program. He will attend the University of Mt. Union. Caleb is working for Energy by Native American Design and will attend Ivy Tech in the fall.

Crawfordsville Community School Corporation: Home of National Merit Scholars

Scott Bowling

Crawfordsville has produced an amazing 85 National Merit Scholars since the program began in 1955, one of the highest totals in the state.

Throughout its history, the city of Crawfordsville has placed a very special emphasis on the importance of education. Nothing exemplifies this commitment more than Crawfordsville Community School Corporation’s success with the National Merit Scholarship program.  Since the National Merit Scholarship Program for nationwide academic competition began more than 60 years ago, the school system has produced an impressive 85 Finalists.

Each year, students from throughout the nation compete for recognition and scholarships in the National Merit program. High School students enter the program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test—a test which serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.5 million entrants each year—and by meeting published program entry and participation requirements.  Of those entrants, only about 50,000 students with the highest PSAT/NMSQT Selection Score (critical reading + mathematics + writing skills scores) qualify for recognition in the National Merit Scholarship Program. In September, these high scorers are notified through their schools that they have qualified as either a Commended Student or Semifinalist.  In late September, approximately two-thirds receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise.  Although Commended Students do not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships, some of these students do become candidates for Special Scholarships sponsored by businesses and corporations. The other one-third of this group of students qualify as Semifinalists. These students represent the highest scoring entrants in each state. To be considered for a National Merit Scholarship, Semifinalists must advance to Finalist standing in the competition by meeting high academic standards as well as other requirements explained in information provided to each Semifinalist.

In February, Semifinalists are notified by mail concerning their advancement to Finalist standing. High School principals are then notified and provided with a certificate to present to each Finalist.  Winners of Merit Scholarship awards are chosen from the Finalist group based on their abilities, skills, and accomplishments without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference. Finalists are eligible to win three types of scholarships—National Merit, Corporate-Sponsored, and College-Sponsored.

Crawfordsville Community School Corporation is among the very top of the state in the number of National Merit Scholars.  As mentioned earlier, Crawfordsville Community School Corporation’s list of Finalists is quite impressive, as 85 Athenians have achieved that honorary status. In addition, 58 Crawfordsville students have achieved Commended status.  From 1956 to 2010, CCSC failed only eight times to produce a merit scholar. In a 27- year run from 1984 to 2010, the school corporation produced either Finalists or those that achieved Commended status each year.  On two separate occasions—1960 and 1985—Crawfordsville Community School Corporation produced an impressive seven Finalists. In 1963, five Athenians were Finalists, and in 1965, four earned that honor. In addition, the Gold and Blue can boast of three Finalists in each of the years 1970, 1972, 1989, 1994, and 2010. Crawfordsville Community School Corporation is justifiably proud of the students and teachers who have worked together over many years to create a culture academic achievement at the highest level.  The school corporation continues to look for ways to enhance the academic program so that this level of achievement is maintained in the future.
