4th of July

Happy 4th of July! Gaining our independence was not an easy task and maintaining that freedom is not any easier either. During the upcoming 4th of July holiday please take some time to remember our service members abroad, at home, and our retired veterans. They are the ones who continue to be committed to preserving and paying the high price of our freedom.

As a Chamber of Commerce, we are grateful for the many liberties our country empowers each of us with. We all have the right to make a better tomorrow for ourselves with the opportunity being involved in business can afford. This year, please make an effort for the 4th of July to be more than a cook-out, fireworks, and a possible day off from work. Take some time to acknowledge those who allow us our freedoms every day and make the most of our “land of opportunity”. As each member of our Chamber celebrates this important holiday in their own way, we “the people” should appreciate the economic environment and free enterprise system we have allowing us to achieve any milestone.

We continue to be dedicated to providing benefits and services to our members that will enhance their business success, to be an advocate for business in dealing with local, county and state government; and to promote the economic health of the county. Thank you for your investment in us as we continue to provide the resources and benefits you need to achieve your lofty goals.

Trainer Tip

Denise Reese

Many people say they do not have time to exercise.  That is not true.  We all have to MAKE time to exercise.  Schedule it in , at least three days per week, like an appointment.  Don’t let anything get in the way.  And if we cannot do that, well then it might be we don’t really want to exercise.

Neuroscience

Colleen Moran

I recently toured the United Kingdom (UK) with 39 graduate students to visit schools in Scotland and England. The purpose of the trip was to compare those schools with American schools in terms of their structure, curriculum, culture, accountability and challenges. The structure and curriculum vary some but most interesting was their accountability systems and challenges. Scotland has managed to avoid the pressure of standardized testing. English schools are more similar to us in that testing drives the curriculum. However, in both countries, the State acknowledges the importance of developing the whole student. The UK has discovered what we have seen in our students…many lack resilience. These are the attributes that provide students with the strength and fortitude to face overwhelming obstacles they will face in life. Studies have shown that students who lack resilience have experienced childhood adversity or trauma in their early years.

So what are we doing about it? In early June all Montgomery County Schools and Western Boone Schools gathered in teams of 5 from every elementary, middle/junior high and high school to be trained by Dr. Lori Desautels. Teams were comprised of teachers, counselors and administrators. Dr. Desautels taught us about the framework and discipline of applied educational neuroscience. When educators understand what is happening in the student brain, we can better help students understand how automaticity, emotions, and thinking are affected. The greatest time of brain development in students is prenatal to age 3. The brain is far more impressionable in early life than in maturity. The second greatest development range is from age 9-14. Students’ brains that have encountered adversity or trauma at an early age can be hindered in development. Adversity can include traumatic birth, exposure to toxins like drugs and alcohol, food and housing insecurity, early surgeries/accidents, abuse, etc. However, neuroplasticity allows the brain to buffer the trauma when we teach students stress response techniques. School-based teams are planning brain-aligned strategies to weave into the curriculum to help students cope and regulate.

The ongoing training with Dr. Desautels is supported by the Lilly Counseling Grant that our schools have been awarded.
