It’s August 2018! Wow, where did the time go?! School is about to start, last minute family vacations being crammed in, the Chamber will be moving soon! Yes, you heard correctly. Your local area Chamber will have a new home very soon. We will be joining Crawfordsville Main Street, Economic Development, and the Montgomery County Leadership Academy on the fourth floor of the Fusion 54 (aka PNC Bank) building. We are excited for the positive synergy that will be created in this location for the benefit of the economic growth of our county. Please stay tuned for updates on an open house and ribbon cutting ceremony for you to check out the new facility.

Also, we are excited about the positive momentum we are experiencing with our Women In Business and Young Professionals groups. These highly energized and motivated individuals meet to share ideas, get inspired to create, and grow their network of resources. Our Chamber is intent on growing our local “up and comers” and developing the next generation of business leaders. We have partnered with the Montgomery County Leadership Academy to host a quarterly professional development series for our members. Our members send their veteran and new team members to hone in on their team skills.

We are proud to be part and creator of so much progress within our community. We encourage each of our members to get involved and propel our community into success. This is your Chamber and we exist for your benefit.

Safety: Why Working Out with a Friend Works Out Better

Denise Reese

Accountability

You (and your friend) will be more likely to show up and do the workout!  On days you are tired and don’t think you are up to it; your friend is going to be all Gung Ho! And ready to go!  And you don’t want to let your friend down.

It’s more fun!!

Self explanatory!!

You work harder

It is natural to work harder and keep up with someone else. Friends tend to push each other.  And if you are having fun time will pass more quickly. You might just workout a little longer!!  When alone there is a tendency to take it easy or quit

There is safety in numbers if you are going to run or bike at night or out on a desolate road.  Swimming is safer with a friend

Social well being

Training with a partner is a great way to spend time with a friend AND get the workout in. You are killing two birds with one stone and lets face it – there is nothing like the feeling you get spending quality time with a good friend!!!

Camp MoCo Robo

Lynn Ringis

We are half way through our two weeks of Camp MoCo Robo and I'm simply amazed by these junior high kids and their grasp on technology!  It's a different world than when anyone over 40 was that age.
The concept for this camp is to create a pipeline of students who have a basic understanding of the way robots are used in manufacturing.  We hope to stimulate some interest in future robotics programs and careers utilizing STEM.
Forty students have spent four days  working in pairs, programming Lego Mindstorm robots.  They have participated in ice breakers and team building activities and gotten their first glimpse of the DISC personality profile.  It's been fun to watch the leadership skills emerge and see them help each other through challenges.   They have gone on field trips to local manufacturers for a first-hand look at robots as they are used right here in Montgomery County!
Many thanks to Sheridan Hadley, Karen Thada and Lisa Hoagland for their hard work.  Without them, this camp would not be possible.  A big shout out to our community partners who have helped make this week successful: CPM, B & L Engineering, Nick Frey (WCI Farms), Chase Bank, Ivy Tech Community College, LSC Communications, Arni's Subway, HHSB, CSI, Walmart Optical Lab, Pace Dairy, Deckard Engineering, the Montgomery County Community Foundation and the Youth Service Bureau.

Building For Our Future at Southmont Schools

Mr. Brett Higgins, Director of Operations for Southmont Scho

Beginning in the 2015-2016 school year, Southmont Schools embarked on an intensive feasibility study to determine the short- and long-term facility and infrastructure needs for our corporation.  Enlisting the expertise of Fanning-Howey Architecture, the Board and district administration, with input from building principals and staff, developed a comprehensive plan to address identified needs, particularly safety and security, energy efficiency and a wholesale update of our elementary schools.  Life was given to that plan beginning in Summer, 2017 with the construction of a new multi-purpose field for our students and new roofs for our high school and junior gyms.

Anyone who has passed by our buildings can see that the district is serious about providing the best possible learning environment for our students.  Under the management of The Skillman Corporation and through an aggressive timeline, renovation and construction on two additions to our JH-HS complex and construction/renovation of each of our elementary schools began Spring, 2018.  Though the bulk of the work will be completed before students return on August 7th, some work will continue beyond the start of school and into the fall.  Specific projects include the construction of new secure entrances at Ladoga and Walnut and renovation of the existing entrance to New Market; replacement of all HVAC systems at the elementary schools; new doors and windows for Ladoga and Walnut; new roofs, video surveillance systems and interior finishes at each elementary school; new locker rooms for outdoor sports at the JH-HS; new CTE (Career and Technical Education) wing at the JH-HS; new softball and baseball complex; and more.  For visual updates on our buildings, please visit our webpage at http://www.southmontschools.org/building-our-future.

This is an exciting time for Southmont Schools’ students, staff and communities.  The work being done today will serve our students well into the future.  We would love to have you join us as we begin yet another exciting year in our district.
