CANDIDATE HOLLY MITCHELL

About Holly Mithcell

Holly Mitchell’s commitment to community service and social justice began as early as elementary school, when she volunteered as a campaign worker during a congressional election. A student activist in the early 80’s, Holly began her career as an advocate before she could even vote. From a Coro Foundation Fellowship in Public Affairs, to constituent staff work in then-State Senator Diane Watson’s Los Angeles office, to health and human services policy development and public interest lobbying for the Western Center on Law and Poverty, Holly Mitchell has dedicated her entire career to improving the lives of women, children and working class families in her native state - California.

After spending over a decade in Sacramento working on health policy issues for the State Senate’s Health and Human Services Committee, for CA LEADS (formerly known as CEWAER), and for the California Black Women’s Health Project, Holly left her role as a public interest advocate for low-income working families to return to Los Angeles and focus her attention on child care policy.

As a working mother of a third grader, Holly understands the needs of the working poor families she serves as Chief Executive Officer of one of the largest child development agencies in California, providing access to child care services to approximately 25, 000 children on a daily basis in South Los Angeles County. While leading a multi-million dollar social services organization that must meet payroll, compete for funding, contract with entrepreneurs and deliver services, Holly’s public policy expertise has enabled the agency to enlarge its role in shaping California child care policy.

She has received honors and recognition statewide for her work in supporting women’s issues from the National Women’s Political Caucus – Westside Chapter, Los Angeles African American Women’s Public Policy Institute (LAAAWPPI), Black Women for Political Action (BWOPA), the California Black Women’s Health Project and, most recently, she was recognized by L.A. County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas as his 2009 Woman of the Year.

Holly’s perspective and keen organizational skills are valued by both national and statewide entities. She has served as a guest lecturer at Rutgers University’s Center for the American Woman and Politics, and in various capacities with Women in Government in Washington DC, the National Conference of State Legislators, the Governor’s Office of Women’s Health Advisory Council, the University of California’s Breast Cancer Research Council, and the California State Commission on the Status of Women.

Holly is a member of the board of directors of the Liberty Hill Foundation, Verbum Dei High School in Watts, and the national advisory council of Breast Cancer Action. In 2005, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa appointed her to serve on the Commission for Children, Youth and their Families.

CANDIDATE REGINALD JONES - SAWYER SR.

About Reggie Jones-Sawyer

Reggie Jones-Sawyer brings a unique blend of experience and accomplishments in business, labor, and civil rights to his campaign for the Democratic nomination in the 47th Assembly District.

Reggie currently serves as Director of Asset Management for the City of Los Angeles, Secretary of the California Democratic Party, and Chair of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Los Angeles.

His history of public service includes serving as Chair of the LA County Small Business Commission, an Assistant Deputy Mayor for the City of Los Angeles, and Vice President of the LA Professional Managers Association (affiliated with SEIU Local 721).

Born into the Fight for Civil Rights and Social Justice
Reggie’s family was one of the pioneers in the civil rights movement. His uncle was one of the “Little Rock Nine” – high school students who braved violent mobs to integrate Little Rock’s Central High School in 1957…one of the most important events in our nation’s history.

While Reggie was only an infant during his uncle’s experience, he later faced an eerily similar situation as a young boy in Hartford, Connecticut. Reggie was one of the first African American students to be bussed out of his neighborhood in an effort to integrate suburban schools and provide inner city youth with a better education.

Reggie drew the courage he needed from the strength of his uncle. He knew that individual acts could change the course of history. The result was a lifelong commitment to civil and human rights, and a passion for improving the community around him.

A Lifetime of Service and Accomplishments
■Reggie earned a Bachelor of Science in Public Administration from USC, and completed the prestigious Program for Senior Executives in State and Local Government at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.
■In 2001, Reggie was first elected as one of the five statewide officers (and the highest-ranking African American) in the California Democratic Party. He was unanimously reelected earlier this year.
■As the Director of Asset Management for the City of Los Angeles, Reggie is responsible for overseeing the management of $22 million in leases for 800 city-owned properties worth more than $2 billion.
■While serving as Assistant Deputy Mayor for the City of Los Angeles, Reggie transformed the bureaucratic quagmire of the City’s permit development process into a more customer friendly agency that helped create the Magic Johnson Theater and Staples Arena.
■Reggie also served as Chair of the Baldwin Hills Conservancy, USC Black Alumni, New Frontier Democratic Club, and the American Society for Public Administration - Los Angeles Chapter.
But Reggie’s greatest joy in life is raising his three children, Lauren Diane Jones-Sawyer, Reginald Byron Jones-Sawyer, Jr., and Evan Brendon Jones-Sawyer.

CANDIDATE ROBERT JONES

About Robert Jones

Taking Action, Getting Results!

After very careful consideration of early support and encouragement from district, business and community leaders, I am writing to respectfully request your support as I seek election to the 47th Assembly District seat in 2010.

Due to term limits, an open seat will be created in the next election cycle. While there will likely be a host of candidates running in this election, I am the only candidate to date, with qualifications combining over 40 years of diverse corporate, legal, political, legislative, governmental policy, civic and military experience. I have a long record of fighting for democratic values.

For nearly 20 years, my family and I have resided in the 47th AD and have been actively working to improve the quality of life in our community. My love for this community has prepared me for the challenges confronting our district today. The depth and range of my experience is perfectly suited to ensure that the residents of the 47th AD are well represented with a champion who will stand up and lead with the same fighting spirit for a successful 2010 election.

Many individuals in our community have given up on politicians who promise the world just to get elected. Once in office, they cant seem to return phone calls or respond to our needs. We need access to resources and information. Our community has real and immediate needs such as jobs, economic development, decent housing, foster and child care, elder and health care, crime prevention and environmental protection.

I am a candidate for the 47th AD because government needs to put people first. As an aggressive policymaker and with your support, we can ensure that every resident of the district from the minimum wage earner to the business owner is equally heard and represented. With your support, we can tackle difficult issues and advance the quality of life in order to achieve real results and positive outcomes for working families and small and medium size businesses.

My professional, educational, military and community experience combined with my passion to serve uniquely qualifies me to represent the citizens of 47th Assembly District. For the last 12 years I have been a partner and Chief Arbitrator with Jones & Parker, P.C., a business arbitration and mediation firm. Resolving disputes for individuals and agencies such as the Better Business Bureau provides me with insights into balance, fairness and due process.

Appointed by Governor Gray Davis, and re-appointed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, I am currently President of the Baldwin Hills Conservancy, which oversees the administration of $40 million earmarked for the restoration and expansion of Kenneth Hahn Park. California Assembly Speaker Herb J. Wesson, Jr., appointed me to serve in Sacramento, on the Board for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors which regulates the practice of engineering in the state of California.

As a very active Democrat, I am presently serving the Los Angeles Democratic Central Committee as Co-Chair of the Legislative Committee, and member of the Rules and Law, Judicial Appointments and Resolutions Committees. I am currently the Vice President of the Baldwin Vista Home Owners Association. I am past First vice-President and Parliamentarian of New Frontier Democratic Club, member of the African American Caucus of the California Democratic Party and member of the 47th Assembly District Club.

These experiences only fueled my passion to serve others. In Los Angeles I have many civic accomplishments which include election as Representative-at-Large to the 8th CD Empowerment Congress and President of the 77th Street Community based Policing Council in addition to election as Commander and Chief Executive Officer of the Los Angeles American Legion Post #252, where I also served as Judge Advocate.

In recognition of extraordinary activism and dedicated service to the Democratic Party and the Greater Los Angeles Community, I was selected Democrat of the Year 2001 by the LA Democratic Party. I received official commendations from many notables such as U.S. Senators Dianne Feinstien and Barbara Boxer, Congresswomen Diane E. Watson and Maxine Waters, Governor Gray Davis, State Senators Kevin Murray and Richard Alarcon, Assembly Speaker Herb Wesson, LA Supervisors Yvonne Burke and Mark Ridely-Thomas.

My record of public service includes serving as Congressional Aide to Congressman John Conyers, Jr.-(D), Legal Assistant to former D.C. Mayor Walter E. Washington-(D) and Legislative Deputy to former D.C. Councilwoman Nadine Winters-(D).

My journey to success was not a traditional road. As a troubled teen and high school drop-out, I enlisted in the United Stated Army. In 1967, after honorably serving in the Vietnam War and receiving the Vietnam Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and the National Defense Service Medal, I completed the Armys Non-Commission Officers Academy and the Army School of Engineering. Following active duty, I obtained a GED and went on to earn an Associate degree in Business Administration from Brookdale College, N.J. With no place to stay except for the back seat of a car, I continued on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science at Rutgers University, N.J. Later, I obtained a Juris Doctorate from Howard University School of Law and served on the faculty of Brookdale College as a professor of business law. I completed a certification in Complex Negotiations from the Harvard Law Schools Executive Leadership Program, Cambridge, MA.

My wife Kaidi, our two sons Marcus and Kobe and I with reside in Baldwin Vista. We are very proud that both of our sons attend the Los Angeles Unified School District and are recent graduates of Windsor Hills Elementary School.
