There is an old saying that “to a carpenter everything looks like a nail.” This issue of the Asian Pacific American News and Review paraphrases that as “to a teacher everything
looks like a lesson” since it is dedicated to education. In this edition we offer some of the many and varied aspects of teaching, and teachers.
The “subjects” covered in our “classroom” include Government, pages 5 and 6; the Arts pages 5 and 14, Social Studies, pages 10 and 11; Math, page 15; Language Arts, pages 7 and 9; Economics, pages 6, 14 and 15; and Health, pages 11, 12, and 13, for starters. To teachers, and we are all teachers of one kind or another, the “lessons” contained in this edition are virtually endless.
We are also all students. We can, and should, continue to learn throughout our life. Our parents are the first in a long line of teachers with their children as their students. As children grow they take their place as teacher alongside parents, grandparents, and professional educators.
We learn from life in a variety of ways, formal education, life experiences, role models, and more. We also learn from a variety of texts, however, the only text that most people
continue to read throughout their lives is the newspaper. And we at the APA News and Review are proud to take our place as a partner in that worthy endeavor. Enjoy reading,
and learning, with our annual Education issue.
Our next issue will be in celebration of Asian Heritage Month, which is always packed with stories and photos showcasing the history, contributions, and beauty of Asian Pacific Americans to society. The issue is due out in early May. Look for it!
