ommunity Medical Centers, Inc. (CMC) began in the 1960's as a volunteer effort of the San Joaquin Medical Society, the San Joaquin Local Health District and the Community Action Council. Local physicians, nurses, dentists and community activists who recognized the lack of health and social services programs formed service teams to address the needs of migrant farm workers and their families. The providers went out to the fields and worked from their cars to deliver medical care, to supply food and clothing and to link families with available services. In 1967, the San Joaquin Medical Society received state and federal funding to support the development of two small facilities, as well as mobile clinics to provide services throughout the county. From these early beginnings, CMC has grown to provide comprehensive primary and preventive care at eleven clinical sites in the counties of San Joaquin, Solano, and Yolo.Community Medical Centers provide health care to the community’s poor and medically underserved. For more than 40 years, CMC had brought doctors, basic health services and medical facilities into the community to serve those who need us the most. CMC’s Health Centers serve the working poor, the uninsured, farm workers, homeless persons and other vulnerable populations.
Today, in a three-county service area, CMC serves more than 69,000 patients with more than 233,000 patient visits annually. CMC is one of the largest safety net providers of health care in its service area. More than half of CMC’s patients have their health care paid for by Medi-Cal. More than 30% are uninsured and pay for their health care on a sliding fee scale basis. CMC patients speak many different languages. May have limited education and inadequate housing, and 2 out of 3 have income levels of less than 200% poverty.
While so many health care organizations struggle to survive, CMC through community support and dedicated physicians and staff, has been able to continue providing access to preventive and primary health services regardless of a person’s ability to pay.
