Nakoma & LSCC Host Coffee Hour

By Donna Mills

One of our goals for 2020 is to have more member gatherings. Tracy Metzler from Nakoma suggested the Resort host a coffee hour where members could gather once a month, before business hours, and mingle. We think this is a wonderful idea!
We are calling it "Work it Wednesday Coffee Hour." It is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. on the first Wednesday of every month, starting in March on the 4th. All Chamber members are invited to have coffee or tea and a pastry at the Wigwam Restaurant, and just visit with your business neighbors before you go to work that Wednesday. We want to use this time to welcome newcomers in our business community, share ideas and talk about concerns. If you know of someone who might want to join the Chamber, bring them along!
The Chamber has already seen more visitor and relocation foot traffic this year than in previous years at the same time. We are optimistic that 2020 will be a stellar year for commerce, and want to help our members make the most of it.
So, mark your calendars: Nakoma Resort, March 4, 7:30 a.m., Wigwam Restaurant, Clio. Why? Because you are WORTH IT!
You should have received an evite by now. Please do RSVP to the Chamber so we let our elves know how many tasty treats to bake up. See you there!

SIERRA MOUNTAIN PROPERTIES

If morning mingles are not your thing -- no worries! We know you have busy schedules, so we want to give folks options to meet new people and visit with old friends. The Lost Sierra Chamber of Commerce is joining forces with Sierra Mountain Properties in March to kick off the mixer season with an evening of fun, food and drink.
This event is open to members and non-members.  A special invite to vacation rental owners in the area! Join us and pick up a complimentary package of area information to hand out to your guests and learn about joining your local Chamber of commerce.
RSVP to your evite, or...if you didn't get one, give us a call here at the Chamber (530-836-6811) and let us know you are coming.
Want to host a mixer with the Chamber? It's fun, its easy, and we'll get the word out! Give us a call and we'll find a month that works for you. Let's shake things up in 2020!

It's Official!

By Donna Mills

The Lost Sierra Visitor Center, next door to the Chamber, is now under the umbrella of the Lost Sierra Foundation, a non-profit, 501(c)(3), thanks mainly to the efforts of Linda English. The Chamber itself is a non-profit 501(c)(6), which means one can still deduct donations and memberships to the Chamber from their taxes. It just means, as a (c)(6), the Chamber cannot apply for grant monies, but now the LSF can.
It has always been the Chamber's goal to make the Visitor Center a self-sustaining entity. The Chamber has been subsidizing the Center since its inception in 2016. While the Center receives donations from visitors and locals alike throughout the year, these and our fundraisers are not enough to keep the doors open. But our story continues.
Thanks again to Linda, who also successfully applied for the Center's first grant. The Visitor Center received $1,000 from the Common Good Community Foundation in Quincy earlier this month. We will use the grant this year to expand our history library, and create and print much needed materials on the many natural resources and economic assets Plumas County and surrounding areas have to offer.
The Center is the central gathering place where a broad spectrum of information can be found and disseminated. It is the place where anyone can come to learn about the many museums throughout the area, how to access the forests, lakes and rivers, and how to protect this extraordinary area of Northern California.
If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation to the Visitor Center, please write it to the "Lost Sierra Foundation," and mail it to P.O. Box 1043, Graeagle, CA 96103. Thank you in advance for your continued support.

Visitor Center Gets Face Lift

By Donna Mills

We closed the Chamber and the Visitor Center for several weeks this Winter so we could do some "deep cleaning." It seemed the deeper we cleaned, the dirtier and more tired the Center looked.
The Chamber occupied the Center's suite for many years, before we opened a separate office close by and designating the space as home to the Visitor Center.
The walls had been painted over in some areas, giving the Center a rather "freckled" look. In addition, the 1980's reception counter made the whole Center look dated.
We consulted with some friends and Chamber members, and with the help of several volunteers, began transforming the Center. We are by no means done, as we are on a shoe-string budget and short financial leash.  But we are well on our way to giving the Center it's own personality and rustic charm.
We are currently treasure hunting for special fixtures (tables, benches, shelving) that will help us display items and tie things together. If you have something that you may no longer need and think it might look good in the Center, stop by the office. It may find its new, perfect, forever home right here in the Lost Sierra.

Reno Still Discovering Lost Sierra

By Donna Mills

We spent the day with Tracy Metzler from Nakoma at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center earlier this month for the Reno-Sparks Chamber 2020 Alliance event. We met dozens of folks -- some born and raised right there in Reno -- who never knew Plumas and Sierra County existed.
We handed out Visitor Bags with general information of things to do and places to visit right here in the Lost Sierra. It was a wonderful networking opportunity, and we look forward to participating in future events with the Reno-Sparks Chamber.

Grant Writers Needed

As mentioned above, the Lost Sierra Visitor Center is in need of funding. One resource is through grants. We are looking for individuals who believe in our mission, want to see the Visitor Center succeed, and have a knack for research and writing. Give us a call and let us know if you can help us secure funding for the Center. Let's work together to make a difference in our community!

Publishing Newsletter Content

You may have noticed Donna's byline...a lot! While we always have something here to say at the Chamber, we LOVE to publish member stories, thoughts, ideas, posters, events, etc.
If you have content for our newsletter, please send it to us several weeks in advance of when you need it to reach the Chamber Membership. We (normally) publish the third Wednesday of the month, so we can publish timely information from that date through or past the end of the following month as long as we have it by the second Wednesday of the month. Confusing? Call us.
