The Nevada Mining Association has approximately 300 members including precious metal and industrial mineral mining companies, exploration and development companies, and suppliers of goods and services, to the industry. The association also welcomes individuals interested in the industry.
Nevada is a mineral rich state with a great tradition of producing the raw materials on which our society depends. Natural resources mined in Nevada include clays, diatomite, molybdenum, barite, lithium, gypsum, silica, lime and copper. Additionally, the mining of geothermal energy has expanded significantly as Nevada and the country look to increase utilization of renewable power.
Of course the state is best known for the production of gold and silver. Nevada fulfills a significant amount of the world’s demand for these precious metals producing 6 million ounces a year of gold and 8 million ounces a year of silver.
While only 2 percent of the state’s GDP, the mining industry plays a valuable role in the state’s economy—especially in rural Nevada. The industry contributes over $200 million in taxes each year, representing $14,000 per employee—one of the state’s highest per employee business sectors. Mining’s 14,000 employees are paid over $70,000 per year plus benefits. These contributions coupled with millions in charitable donations illustrate how mining is doing its part to keep Nevada’s economy going.
