We are proud to announce our newest addition to our Chamber board, Sophia Eckert!

Sophia grew up in Arkansas and spent her high school years moving around a bit, attending Little Rock Central High for two years, then moved to Tennessee and went to Blackman High School, graduating from Murfreesboro Tennessee.

She received a Bachelor of Science in Pyschology from the University of Washington in Seattle, and got her Masters in Environmental Policy and Management from the University of Denver.

Sophia moved to Humboldt in July, 2013 and began working for Humboldt Redwoods State Park as a Park Interpreter for the summers of 2014 and 2015.

Sophia currently works as the Executive Director for The Humboldt Redwoods Interpretive Association, which is an educational non-profit group working in cooperation with the California State Parks at Humboldt Redwoods State Park, Richardson Grove State Park, Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park, and Sinkyone Wilderness State Park within the North Coast Redwoods District, Eel River Sector.

Sophia loves hiking, camping, traveling and any type of exploration, as well as loves gardening and cooking!  One of her biggest passions is Environmental Conservation!

Sophia is a well informed source and representative in our community, and she aims to  continue being a great resource for incoming tourists.  She strives to make a good experience for visitors coming into the area!

Tourism is an important and essential part of our community and Sophia hopes to help be a voice for the tourists that come through our Visitor's Center as well as those traveling through the Avenue of the Giants!

Thank you for partnering up with us Sophia, you are a great addition to the team and we are very lucky to have you!

Welcome aboard!

Training and Development!

Jenny Early

Attention business owners and educational seekers, we need your help!

The Chamber is currently working with the Director of Community Education at College of the Redwoods on offering a wide variety of classes for our Southern Humboldt Community!
We would like to hear from business owners, employees and anyone interested in getting training and broadening their minds in the work force!

A variety of classes can be offered and implemented at the Garberville CR site, we just need to know WHAT it is you need and want!

Some ideas for classes we have been talking about are:

1.  Customized employee training - specific to job requirements
2.  Management – for people, projects and departments
3.  Security training - for hospital engineers
4.  Hospitality training
5.  Computer courses – such as microsoft office, excel, word, power point
6.  Accounting/budgeting – such as quick books
7.  Culinary arts – serv safe courses and certificate achievement
8.  Construction – maintenance technician
9.  Medical field - assisting in certification completion

If you are a business owner and would like specific training in certain areas for your employees, or you are someone wanting to take some classes to expand your knowledge,  please tell us what you need!

There are programs out there to help and they can be available in our area!

If you are a teacher yourself, and interested in teaching a class locally, you might have the option to do so at the CR Site in Garberville!

Please contact us if you are interested!

Economic Development Forum!

Jenny Early

Last Thursday, we participated in an Economic Development Forum with many others all over Humboldt County.  Representatives of different parts of Humboldt were split up into categories to discuss certain topics throughout the day.

The Chamber was a part of discussing community updates and some of the main areas of focus were:

- Biggest challenges for economic development within our community
- Programs that support economic development
- Biggest opportunities for economic development in our area
- What changes are going on in our area

This all day forum was informational, educational and it was a great way to discuss and share ideas on how to help Humboldt County thrive!

Thank you Susan Seaman of the Arcata Economic Development Center for inviting us to attend and participate!
