Is cheaper really better? (03/18/11)
Each state has its own insurance laws & coverage requirements (some states are PIP states, some are not) so when you move to a new state, you have to contact a local agent for insurance. Insurance policies cannot be transferred between states due to the different coverage's and forms required in each state. Your current carrier cannot renew your policy and indeed may cancel you on the spot when you let them know you have moved. Get your new policy and then cancel your old one on the same day.
We are all aware that Arizona has high insurance rates. No question about it and that makes it tempting for one to push-off changing their insurance to their new address in Arizona. If you are doing this to try to get better rates, think again.
Should there be an accident, regardless of whose fault it is, the investigative unit of the each insurance company will check things out. They will discover that you are not insured in the state you live in and they will almost certainly deny your claim because the policy was void because of material misrepresentation on your part. I have seen it happen. Then, regardless of whose fault the accident was, you will be liable for all of it financially because you did not have insurance as required by the state in which you lived and you will be out those 'cheaper' premiums you paid.

What to do if a Hail or Wind Storm Damages Your Home or Auto (10/05/10)
My skylight shattered during today's storm. If you, like me, see signs of hail damage to your home, take some steps to help prevent further damage. Cover any broken windows or skylights to help prevent water damage.
If you car has broken glass, cover it to prevent further damage to the interior. Carefully remove the broken glass from the carpet and seats. Hail damage to your auto is considered comprehensive coverage and is subject to a deductible. Comprehensive coverage is optional and not everyone chooses to purchase it.
Then call your insurance company or agent. Most hail damage is covered, subject to your deductible. You may be asked for a written explanation of what happened. Because lots of people have damage and will be filing claims, it may take a few days for your insurance company to get an adjuster to you. Meanwhile, save the receipts for any money you spent to cover the damage and prevent further damage. You may be able to get reimbursed for these funds from your insurance company. Or they may be applied to your deductible.
Don't let anyone other than the adjuster and roofer walk around on your roof; walking on certain types of roofing can cause even more damage.
For your repair, select a company that is creditable and has a good reputation. After storms like these, there will be roofing companies springing up. Make sure the company you work with has a good reputation and insurance. If they don't have the appropriate insurance you could be liable if a worker is injured or a neighbor's property is damaged. Ask for local references and then call the references.

Why Your Employer Benefits May Not Be Enough (09/27/10)
The amount of coverage provided by an employer-sponsored life insurance policy will vary from company to company. This is because of the large number of employees that need coverage and the desire of the employer to keep premiums low. Many employees who receive life insurance from their employers find that the payout is less than if they had purchased their own life insurance policy.
Employer issued life insurance may not be enough because the policies are designed for a large group and not for the needs of the individual. So, one does not have the ability to chose the policy that works best for them and their family.
Additionally, the employer may choose to terminate the policy for all employees, the employee may leave the company or the company may become insolvent and have to close. This can be detrimental to the person who doesn’t have their own life insurance policy for many reasons; the older one is the more life insurance will cost them or health issues, such as recent cancer treatment, may make them uninsurable.
Life insurance obtained through private companies usually pay claims quickly. With life insurance through work it can take 30 days or more after a person dies to receive the insurance money. While this may not seem like a long time, for a family struggling with the loss of a loved one and the financial strain that can accompany that, it can seem like forever.
These are just a few of the reasons why one’s life insurance issued by their job may not be enough for the individual. To avoid these problems, individuals should think about alternatives as opposed to only relying on their employment issued life insurance policy. This will help one to determine if their bases are covered in regards to having a life insurance policy in that will be enough to protect their loved ones down the road.
