Purchasing Fair/Trade Show Draws Hundreds

The Chamber, Luke Air Force Base and the City of Glendale once again collaborated to host the 8th Annual “Mastering the Purchasing Maze” Procurement Fair and Trade Show at the Glendale Civic Center on April 26. Sponsored by Arizona State Credit Union, 65 exhibitors displayed their products and services to more than 500 small businesses and government agencies that attended.

According to Chamber member Deborah Norris, of Nelson Insurance, the show was very successful. “Within two days I received three requests for quotes from businesses I talked to at the show, closed one right away, and am confident that I will probably close one of the others before the week is out!” Similar sentiments were also expressed by other exhibitors. Attendees were lined up for most of the show at Luke Air Force Base and the City of Glendale tables, seeking information to bid on Base and City projects.

Past Chairman of the Chamber Board Deborah Campbell, FASTSIGNS on Bell, said “Although the crowd was smaller than in 2010, I was able to have better quality conversations with the businesses I spent time with. This has always been a great show. My company got a huge contract as a result of being here in 2010. Members are missing out if they do not attend or exhibit. Its great networking!”

The 2012 Show is tentatively scheduled for April 24.

Business Comes Together to Help Pass Legislation

Chambers of Commerce in Arizona and around the U.S. were instrumental in the passage of legislation favorable to business in 2011.

One of the most significant victories for business at the federal level was the repeal of the 1099 Rule, a piece of legislation hidden in the federal health care overhaul that would have required all businesses to file IRS Form 1099 to report anyone with whom they did more than $600 worth of business in a given year. The result would have been the burying of American small businesses in a massive pile of paperwork. Thankfully, Chambers of Commerce across the U.S. led the effort with other business groups in getting the legislation repealed.

On the state level, the business community came together to craft a sensible two year unemployment insurance solution, a jobs creation package, and provided input to cities and homebuilders to help craft a new Impact Fee bill that helps to better define what can be done with development (impact) fees cities charge to developers as well as how they are calculated and collected.

Andy Tobin was also appointed Arizona Speaker of the House, replacing Kirk Adams, who resigned to run for Congress.

NEW TRACK TO BE UNVEILED AT PHOENIX INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY

In February, PIR President Bryan R. Sperber, announced the details related to the NASCAR’s facility’s first major track improvement since 1990. Construction, including removal and reuse of the old racing surface and subsequent installation of a new surface to go with a series of changes designed to promote side-by-side racing, began in March and will continue up to September.
Aside from the installation of a new, four layer asphalt and aggregate surface, the track pavement project includes: widening the front stretch from 52 to 62 feet; reconfigure pit road with the installation of concrete pit stalls; push the dog leg curve between turns 2 and 3 out to 95 feet; tighten the turn radius of the dog leg from 800 to 500 feet; implement variable banking to ensure the immediate use of two racing grooves, including 10-11 degree banking between turns 1 and 2, 10-11 degree banking in the apex of the dog leg and 8-9- degree banking in turn 4.
The new track will be introduced November 10-13 when the Kobalt 500 returns as the semi final race in NASCAR’s playoffs in the Chase for the Sprint Cup.
