Chamber Auction Gala To Feature Comedy of Michael Finney

The Chamber’s 18th Annual Auction Gala will be held on October 28 at the Glendale Civic Center from 6-9pm. This year’s Pirate-themed “Treasures of Glendale” will feature a large silent auction, entertainment during dinner, and a special show featuring the comedy of Glendale’s own Michael Finney. Finney is a well known comedian and magician, performing on a regular basis in Casino Arizona’s “Showstoppers”, and hosts the Annual “Dry Heat Classic Golf Classic and All Star Comedy Review” at Wild Horse Pass Casino in Phoenix. Michael was a finalist on the Ed McMahon “Star Search” show in the 1980’s and still works over 40 weeks a year around the country and overseas in comedy clubs, casinos and at corporate events. He has appeared on The George Lopez Show, An Evening at the Improv, and a number of network television and HBO comedy and magic specials. He will be appearing at the Palladium in London and touring Malaysia just prior to our event.
Tickets will be available after August 1 for this event and Chamber members wishing to donate an item for the auction to promote your business should contact the Chamber at 623-937-4754.
More details will be forthcoming in our August edition of “The Pulse”.

KEEP YOUR CHILDREN BUSY, INSTEAD OF BORED, THIS SUMMER

Instead of getting lazy in front of the TV all summer, give them something fun, lucrative or rewarding to do. Victoria Sherrard of Sylvan Learning Center in Glendale suggests getting kids to think out of the box. If they are interested in music or acting, use their creativity by putting on a play or form a small band to put on a neighborhood concert with other kids. They can even write a short story. Start a book club with neighborhood kids and treat them to a pizza and pool party the honor their success.

Many neighbors would greatly appreciate some help with jobs around the house and make some spending money in the process. Things like cleaning up the yard, cutting grass, walk the dogs, wash the cars and help with errands.

Overexerting Can Lead To Workplace Injury

By SCF Arizona

Preventing injuries caused by overexertion can be a concern for employers in Arizona’s intense summer heat. According to “Injury Facts 2011,” an annual work safety publication, overexertion accounts for about 3.3 million emergency room visits and is the third leading cause of unintentional injuries in the United States.

SCF Arizona, the state’s leading workers’ compensation insurance company, advises Arizona businesses that many jobs require demanding physical activity. Workers who become tired or fatigued are more susceptible to overexerting themselves and are more likely to suffer injuries as a result.

None of Arizona’s “Free Money” Being Spent by Other States in Wake of Extended B

By Farrell Quinlan
NFIB/ARIZONA

The Arizona Legislature’s recently concluded special session on extending unemployment benefits revealed a number of misconceptions, misunderstandings and misrepresentations on how America’s and Arizona’s unemployment insurance systems work. Because unemployment benefits are governed by the weaving of complex federal and state laws that are designed to reflect certain principles of insurance and federalism, it is no surprise that the news media, elected officials, business owners and the general public were confused and developed certain assumptions that are untrue.

Two of the most broadly held but incorrectly understood aspects of triggering unemployment benefits in addition to the 72 weeks of regular state and federal emergency unemployment benefits are 1) who’s paying for the benefits and 2) who’s getting that money now that Arizona has forgone extending benefits.

There’s NO Free Money

HEALTH CONCERNS WITH THE SUMMER HEAT

Whether you are new to the area or have lived here for many years, the summer heat can be intense and, in many occasions, dangerous. During the Arizona summer, a large number of emergency room visits are attributed to heat related illnesses, which can be prevented when properly understood. Heat related illness can take on three different forms; heat cramps, heat exhaustion and, the most serious, heat stroke.

For more information, contact Dr. Joseph Luzon, medical director for the Banner Thunderbird Emergency Department, though the Public Relations Department at 602-865-5779.

BANNER THUNDERBIRD IS THE FIRST HOSPITAL IN ARIZONA USING FOUR DIMENSIONAL IMAGI

Lung tumors have long been difficult to target and treat because internal organs, along with the tumor, move as the person breathes. Banner Thunderbird Medical Center is the first in Arizona and one of only a few nationwide to upgrade its radiation treatment equipment to four dimensional technology. It allows for a more precise targeting of radiation to tumors, thus greatly reducing damage to surrounding tissue and allowing clinicians to deliver high doses of radiation. This can lead to better results and fewer treatments.
