MAYOR SCRUGGS’ 2012 STATE OF THE CITY ADDRESS TO BE HELD MARCH 15 AT GLENDALE CIVIC CENTER

 Mayor Elaine Scruggs will give her 2012 State of the City Address on Thursday, March 15 at the Glendale Civic Center in conjunction with the Glendale Chamber of Commerce’s 61st Annual Business Appreciation Luncheon.

The theme of Scruggs’ speech this year is “Fact Check: Glendale, AZ 2012.” During her speech, she will cover how the different geographic areas of the city are all contributing significantly to attracting, sustaining and capitalizing on new economic development opportunities.

Joining the mayor this year as her special guest speaker will be John Lenio, managing director at CBRE. Lenio has been involved in economic development projects in all 50 states in the U.S. and 10 provinces in Canada.

Also speaking will be Steve Tanger, CEO of the newly announced Tanger Outlets project at Westgate.

Tickets for the luncheon are $60 per person or $480 for a table of eight and can be purchased from the Glendale Chamber of Commerce by calling 623-937-4754.

Registration begins at 10:45 a.m. and the luncheon program begins promptly at 11:30 a.m.

Cuba Trip Info Meeting March 5 -

 The Glendale and Tempe Chambers were selected to be the only two Chambers in the Valley to host one of the first group travel trips to Cuba in 2012! Chamber Explorations, the sponsoring agency, is one of only a handful of professional firms that has received permission to begin bringing groups to Cuba in 2012.

1ST ANNUAL DEER VALLEY EDUCATION FOUNDATION “WALK FOR EDUCATION”

The first annual Deer Valley Education Foundation “Walk for Education” will spotlight the importance of education and highlight the Deer Valley School District’s 37 schools and 36,000 students. It will be held on Saturday, March 10th at Sandra Day O’Connor High School, 25250 N. 35th Ave. $5 per walker is the donation for the walk. Registration begins at 9am. Students, families and friends are invited to take part in the walk. A lucky student who participates in the walk has an opportunity to win an iPad.

Arizona SciTech Festival Goes Through March 14 - What do baseballs, robots, telescopes and chocolate have in common? They are all part of a short roster of what Arizona's first annual science and technology festival will bring people of all ages for family fun using science, technology and innovation. The Arizona Sci Tech festival will showcase over 300 colorful events, demonstrations, tours, games, activities and workshops across the state featuring the career opportunities of the future and the latest technologies right here within our state's border.

GLENDALE FOLK & HERITAGE FESTIVAL

Sahuaro Ranch Park is the location for the Glendale Folk & Heritage Festival on March 24th and 25th from 10am to 5pm. More than 150 performers will present everything from folk and bluegrass music to cowboy poetry and storytelling. Other highlights include historic site tours, blacksmith demonstrations, children’s stage and workshops.

Sahuaro Ranch Park is located at W. Mountain View and N. 59th Ave. Admission is free.

DEER VALLEY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT DISTRIBUTES 260 iPads TO TEACHERS AND SCHOOLS

Twenty teachers in the Deer Valley district were selected to pilot iPads in their classrooms as part of a new K through 12 program. Teachers had an opportunity to apply through grants processed last year. Many teachers will use a wide variety of apps made available on the iPads including interactive math and spelling simulations as well as touring the world’s most famous art museums in class.

GLENDALE CHAMBER DAY AT CAMELBACK RANCH BALLPARK, MARCH 21ST

Spring training has returned to the valley. Camelback Ranch Ballpark will host the Glendale Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, March 21st when the Los Angeles Dodgers host the San Diego Padres with the first pitch at 1pm.

Enjoy a wonderful afternoon in a suite with snacks and refreshments for all who attend. The regular price for a suite ticket is $50 but for Glendale Chamber members its only $20 per person. Payment must be made to the Glendale Chamber of Commerce no later than Friday, March 10th. This is a great way to say thank you to your employees by giving them an afternoon of spring training baseball and network with other chamber members.
As a special surprise for those who attend, one of the chamber members will throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the game.

Please reserve your place in the suite by calling the chamber office at 623-937-4754 no later than March 10th. Checks and credit cards accepted.

13th ANNUAL GLENDALE CHAMBER SPRING GOLF LEAGUE TO BEGIN MARCH 26TH

Get your golfing partner and join the annual Glendale Chamber Spring Golf League, which will begin on Monday, March 26th at 4:30pm at Glen Lakes Golf Course, 5450 W. Northern Ave.
 
You don’t have to be a good golfer to play in the league. A basic handicap format is used so all players are as close to equal as possible. The league consists of two person teams with weekly head on competition. There are three points awarded weekly; one point for each individual competition and one for total team play based on handicap. There are also three closest to the pin contests each week. A barbecue and award night is scheduled for the final night on June 11th.

The total entry fee for all 12 weeks is only $245 per person, which includes golf, cart, closest to the pin prizes and final night barbecue. For information and registration, call Harry Shapiro at the Glendale Chamber, 623-937-4754.

GLENDALE GREEN FESTIVAL - MARCH 31st

The 5th Annual Glendale Green Festival will be held Saturday, March 31st from noon to 4pm at the Glendale Main Library, 5959 W. Brown St. Glendale residents will have the opportunity to pick up free energy saving devices, including a programmable thermostat, 4 pack of CFL energy saving bulbs and a high efficiency showerhead.
 
Glendale students and homeowners are invited to enter the “My Green Glendale” art and photo contest to have their green ideas displayed during the festival and voted on by attendees. There is also a family zone with interactive activities for children.
 

ACCESS 2012 INTERNATIONAL TRADE FORUM COMES TO GLENDALE

ACCESS 2012 is a unique opportunity to hear directly from U.S. Commercial Service officers serving in some of the world’s fastest growing economies. The conference can help your company identify new export markets and opportunities in Africa, the Middle East and South Asia, obtain resources necessary to succeed in these markets and develop strategies.

PEORIA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT RECEIVES ADVANCED ACCREDITATION

Superintendent Dr. Denton Santarelli announced that the Peoria Unified School District will be recommended for District Accreditation through the Advanced Accreditation Commission. It means that the district and its schools are internationally accredited and is recognized globally as a quality school system. The Peoria Unified School District is the first in the state to earn this esteemed accreditation.
