Chamber Opposes Sales Tax Increase

The Glendale Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, representing over 600 businesses in Glendale, is opposing the proposed transaction privilege tax increase being considered by the City of Glendale.  If enacted, the increase would place Glendale’s sales tax as one of the highest in the Valley.

“Our Board realizes the issues the City is facing with a large budget deficit, but we are concerned that an increase such as the one proposed would have a severe negative effect on many Glendale businesses, especially placing those selling high ticket items at a real competitive disadvantage with our neighboring communities”, said Sandy Petraitis, Chairman of the Board.

“We understand the dilemma facing Glendale elected officials, as we’ve all had to make hard decisions and reductions in our respective businesses the past several years.  But we think there are other options to be explored before just simply agreeing to an “across the board” percentage increase.  Many Valley communities have a two tiered transaction privilege (sales) tax, where higher ticket retail items are taxed at a lower rate.  This helps to drive increased sales for those items, instead of placing those businesses at a competitive disadvantage.  In fact, it is a successful marketing tool for vehicle retail centers such as Avondale Auto Mall.”

Petraitis concluded, “The Chamber would ask the City to look at this and other tax options, in hopes of minimizing the negative effects on our business community, before giving the final go ahead to the proposed tax hikes.  There is a concerted effort to place this issue on the ballot this fall.  If that happens and the increase gets voted down, then what are the alternatives?  We think with a little more work, and there is still time, the City may be able to avoid a referendum.  The Chamber is certainly willing to help find a different solution.”

An independent group of local businesses have already indicated their interest in actively pursuing a referendum, should the City pass the proposed tax increase, according to a May 31,2012 Glendale Star article.

Open Elections/Open Government

Are you aware of the Open Elections/Open Government Initiative?  This issue, planned for a statewide referendum this fall, could fundamentally change and reform our election process by encouraging more qualified and independent minded candidates to seek elected office.  Even more important, the measure could open up the election process to more voters.

The measure would create an election system in which every voter will be permitted to vote in every election.  No longer would partisan Primary elections exist in which each party is limited to vote for its own candidates and independent voters are left out.  Under the new system, all voters, regardless of party affiliation, would be free to cast their ballot for the candidate of their choice in an Open Primary election.

All candidates would compete against each other in an Open Primary for local, state and Federal offices (except for President and Vice President).  As a result, candidates will be forced to address issues of importance to all of us – Independents, Democrats and Republicans alike.

The Open Elections/Open Government initiative will do away with partisan Primary elections.  The top two vote getters, regardless of party affiliation, will then face off in the General election, where voters will have a real choice.
