BANNER HEALTH CREATING MORE TRAUMA CENTERS
Banner Health has announced plans to create trauma centers of varying levels at its valley hospitals. It is a decision that will help ensure that trauma patients are better able to receive the right care, at the right time, at the right place. Formal applications will be submitted for three area hospitals. Currently, Banner Good Samaritan is the only level 1 in the system. It requires the most resources and capabilities, providing total care for every aspect of injuries. Banner Baywood in Mesa and Banner Thunderbird in Glendale are seeking level three status while Banner Estrella in Phoenix is seeking level four status. Chamber's Board of Directors

| City Agrees to Two Tiered Sales Tax Proposal
The Glendale City Council enacted a .7 percent city transaction privilege (sales) tax increase on June 12, but is expected to amend that increase to put in place a two tiered system, as suggested by Glendale Chamber leaders. The two tiered system would allow for large ticket items of $5000 and more, to be charged at the current sales tax rate instead of the increased one. This would help to keep large ticket item retailers, who contribute a significant share of the City’s retail sales tax revenue, competitive with surrounding communities.
The Chamber initially opposed the across the board .7 percent increase, but also realized the very difficult position the City was in trying to balance their FY 2012-13 budget. Chamber Executive Committee members met late in May with Mayor Scruggs and individually with several council members to discuss alternatives such as a two tiered system. In subsequent City Council workshops, City staff and elected officials further discussed the two tiered idea and are expected to eventually amend the budget to put the measure in place. A separate group of local business people have worked to create a ballot initiative, that would, if passed by a vote of the public this fall, negate the .7 tax increase and require a vote of the public to approve future transaction privilege tax increases. The Chamber board of directors has, as of this writing, taken no position on this proposal and is expected to review it thoroughly in the near future.
The Chamber would like to thank the members of City Council and Staff for their support of the two tiered tax system. Procurement Fair/Trade Show Sells Out !

Helping Small Businesses in the Economic Recovery
W. P. Carey School & SRP Host Small Business Leadership Academy
Small businesses play a key role in our economic recovery, creating jobs to help get our community back on track. The W. P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University is offering a program to help small business owners and executives learn how to improve efficiency, streamline operations and raise profits. The fifth annual Small Business Leadership Academy is available to the leaders of small and diverse local businesses. “We’ve had phenomenal feedback from business owners who attended the academy over the past several years,” said Dawn Feldman, executive director of the W. P. Carey School of Business Center for Executive and Professional Development, which hosts the program. “Classes are held just one night per week, so they fit right into busy executives’ schedules, and they’re taught by top professors from the highly ranked W. P. Carey School. Participants not only take away great business knowledge, but also a new support network of peers that will exist long after the program is over.” Salt River Project (SRP), the program’s founding co-sponsor, is offering a number of scholarships to its current suppliers and small business customers. “The academy offers an outstanding opportunity for small business owners to gain knowledge from highly acclaimed professors and establish lasting relationships with other community small business owners, all in a well-structured academic, but practical environment,” said Carrie Young, senior director, corporate operations services for SRP. “The partnership we have with ASU, coupled with the sponsorship and scholarships we offer to the academy, is a natural fit for SRP in supporting economic development within our own community.”
