REPEAL OF GLENDALE SALES TAX NOT WITHOUT BUSINESS REPERCUSSIONS

Voters in Glendale will go to the polls November and vote on whether or not to attempt to repeal the temporary sales tax increase that the City Council approved in June 2012, as well as to amend the City Charter to require that all future tax increases go to a vote of the public.  The City of Glendale is informing voters of the importance of the sales tax.  Revenue generated from this tax is for the main budget - the General Fund, and provides funding for services such as public safety (which  accounts for 63% of the general fund), code compliance, libraries and parks and recreation.  The last general sales tax increase was enacted in 1993.  Since that time, Glendale’s population has grown 41% and to serve the needs for current and new residents, the city has added a third library, 32 parks, a recreation and aquatics center, five fire stations and a police precinct.

While much controversy has surrounded this tax increase, the fact of the matter is that, if successfully repealed, a number of severe reductions in City services have been proposed that would negatively impact Glendale businesses :  the city - owned Jobing.com arena would have to be operated and maintained, with or without the Phoenix Coyotes;  250 additional City employee positions (an economic impact similar to a major employer closing)would be eliminated, including reductions in police officers – firefighters – CAT  Team – jail staff – and fire inspectors; closing of 2 Glendale libraries; eliminating all downtown festivals; closure of Rose Lane Aquatic Facility; and shutting down the City’s TV station/online videos to no longer broadcast public meetings.
