CHAMBER LOSES A GREAT FRIEND

The Chamber lost a great friend in Bill Nelson (First In First Out) this past month on December 9th.  Bill served as a Chamber board member from 1998-2004 and Chairman of the Board in 2002.  A number of major Glendale business developments took place during his tenure on the board that he was a part of :  Jobing.com Arena, Westgate, University of Phoenix Stadium, Northern Crossing Shopping Center…to name a few.  There was no bigger advocate for the Glendale Chamber of Commerce.

We were also blessed in 2009 to have his wife, June, serve as our Chairman of the Board.  The Nelsons were major figures at most Chamber events and volunteered countless hours to servicing the Chamber’s computer network….at no cost to our organization.  They negotiated a grant in 2007 that paid for the replacement of our entire hardware and software system, saving the Chamber over $10,000

The Nelsons devoted their lives to others and the Glendale Community, serving the Chamber, Kiwanis, Apollo High School Key Club, West Valley Foundation, Lakeview United Methodist  Church, Banner Thunderbird Therapy Dog Program, Banner Community Council, the Shrine, Grotto, and Salvation Army.

Bill was an avid supporter of Chamber golfing events and we will be naming the Chamber Business Golf League in his honor.

His bright smile, great sense of humor and his big heart will truly be missed!  The Chamber is a better organization as a result of Bill and June’s leadership.

BILL NELSON MEMORIAL SPRING GOLF LEAGUE BEGINS MARCH 25TH

FROM THE ARIZONA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

One of the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry's top legislative priorities for 2013 is to simplify our state’s sales tax system.  Our sales tax is so complicated that you might be surprised to learn that Arizona does not technically have a sales tax. Rather, we have a transaction privilege tax (TPT), something that requires certain merchants to pay for the "privilege" of selling taxable items and a use tax, which is aimed at consumers who purchase certain goods to pay.

Thanks to the leadership of Gov. Jan Brewer and the state Legislature, we have made tremendous progress in tax reform over the past two years. Our corporate income tax rates, capital gains tax rates, business equipment and property assessments are all being reduced to put the state in a better competitive position and to win back the jobs we lost in the Great Recession.
