HCCC Student of the Month: Oct. 2017

Matt Tyson – October Chamber Student of the Month

Matt Tyson is a sophomore student with a 4.12 weighted GPA. He is a starter on the varsity football team, and is also active in FFA and National Honor Society. He is ranked #10 out of the 393 students poised to graduate with the Class of 2019.

Matt was recommended for the Chamber Student of the Month by Mr. Steve Rewis, his football coach. Mr. Rewis relays that Matt is a leader among his peers.  This year, Matt serves as a captain on the football team, the only non senior. In fact, Matt is the first tenth grade captain since 2000. Matt has also been involved with community efforts that include Pop Warner games and serving our elementary schools as a guest reader.  Coach Rewis stated, “Each day I get to witness the passion Matt has for HHS, for his peers, and the young kids that he influences through his positive interactions with them.” In talking with the school principal about his recommendation of Matt, Mr. Rewis recalled that after only a few days observing and working with the Wildcat football team, new Head Football Coach Brian Kemp turned to him and said, “That #42 is special.” When asked about Matt, Coach Kemp states, “Matt is one of the true leaders of our football team, on and off the field. His performance on the football field is matched and exceeded by his academic achievement. His propensity to lead by example as well his integrity makes him a model student, athlete, and citizen to the community.”

As coach Kemp alluded to, Matt has also made an impression on his academic teachers. His English teacher, Mrs. Rachel Thompson stated that, “Matt Tyson is a stellar student who strives for excellence in all he does while encouraging others to do the same.” His science teacher wrote, “Matt Tyson is an enthusiastic learner who sets an example of behavior and cooperation in the classroom.  He conducts himself with a maturity level that sets him apart from the average high school student.  Matt is a self-motivated learner, well-liked by his classmates and a valued member of my class.  I have no doubt that he will be successful in his future academic and personal endeavors.”
