Independent Advocate named to Google News Initiative Startup Lab

The Indianola Independent Advocate is one of 10 online publications named to the inaugural Google News Initiative Startups Lab, a six-month program that provides coaching and capital to help news businesses work toward sustainability, announced GNI and LION Publishers Wednesday.

“These 10 news businesses were selected from nearly 150 applicants across the large — and growing — independent digital journalism landscape,” said the organization. 

The Independent Advocate was launched in January 2019 to cover local news, education, business, sports and more in Indianola and Warren County.

The news businesses include eight start-up publishing companies based in the United Stated and two in Canada.

The funding also provides increases to the College Endowment and a significant contribution to The Simpson Fund.
