The Kirkland Heritage Society's mission is to identify historic resources; to encourage their preservation; to collect, preserve, exhibit and interpret the history and heritage of Kirkland and its people; and to promote public involvement in and appreciation of its heritage and cultures.
Kirkland Heritage Society (KHS) is a resource center dedicated to preserving the history of Kirkland and surrounding area from the early 1870’s to present day. It is located in the lower level of the historic Heritage Hall located at 203 Market Street. This landmarked building, formerly the 1922 First Church of Christ, Scientist, was moved in 1999 from its original location of 220 First Street to its present location, Heritage Park. This park, formerly the location of the Kirkland Schools and Heritage Hall are the property of the city of Kirkland.
Heritage Hall has two levels. The lowered level is home of KHS and is easily accessed by a ramp located on the east side of the building off Market Street. There you will find KHS owned and maintained archives and a museum. All Items displayed are authentic to Kirkland’s history such as our city’s namesake Peter Kirk’s photo, top hat and morning coat, founding family’s photos and stories, Morse telegraph keys from the Kirkland Train Station and high school yearbooks just to name a few. For the youngest of visitors there are “hands-on” items such as a stereoscope with viewing cards, a working candlestick and dial phone and typewriters.
KHS has become a valuable resource center ideal for research as information relevant to the history of Kirkland, buildings, events, and it's people are stored and continually updated on museum software available for the public to view. It is also a great place to bring guests to share our history and to reminisce. There are even chilled bottles of Sarsaparilla available for a $2.00 donation.
KHS is an all-volunteer run organization relying on grants, membership and donations and, as such, is free so all may visit and enjoy our ever evolving history.
Museum hours are Monday from 10:00 a.m. to Noon and Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Phone 425-827-3446 during office hours.
