Going Green Commitments
- The AHRA is committed annually to our Cleanup/Greenup, which we have been spearheading since 1992. In mid May of each year hundreds of volunteers pick up the banks of the Arkansas River, as well as surrounding public lands, to remove unsightly and unhealthy trash. This makes our river and our valley a better place to live - for plants, animals and people!
Hours of Operation
Winter hours, October 1 - April 30, are 8 am -5 pm Monday-Friday. Summer hours beginning the first weekend in May through Labor Day are 8 am -5 pm seven days a week.News

About Us
Welcome to the Arkansas Headwaters, one of the nation's premier recreation areas and home to one of the most popular whitewater rafting rivers in the world! Stretching 150 miles along the Arkansas River from just below Leadville to Lake Pueblo State Park, the AHRA offers abundant and outstanding opportunities for angling, rafting, kayaking, camping, picnicking, hiking, ATV riding, mountain biking and sightseeing among deep canyons, broad valleys and towering mountain peaks. Managed jointly by Colorado Parks and Wildlife and the Bureau of Land Management, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service, AHRA has something for everyone!
Eddies, ripples, deep pools . . . The Arkansas River offers excellent angling along its entier length. Public fishing access is available on public lands and on fishing esements crossing private lands.
The Arkansas River is one of the world's most populater whitewater boating rivers for kayaking and rafting - with good reason. Clear water, dramatic scenery and rapids rated from beginner to expert lure boaters from around the world.
As the Arkansas River flows from the alpine highlands to the prairie lowlands, it attracts and sustains a variety of wildlife species. Big horn sheep, mule deer, pronghorn antelope, bears, cougars and elk all make the river valley their home and can often be spotted drinking from the river or seemingly hanging on the canyon walls.
