Illinois Chamber Updates

February 19, 2019

Highlights from Today:

The House and Senate are in town this week.

The Governor signed SB 1 today into law at the Governor's mansion.  This new bill will implement a statewide $15 an hour minimum wage.   The first increase of $1.00 per hour is set to go into effect on Jan. 1, 2020. The Chamber was opposed to this measure.

The Governor is set to deliver his state of the state and budget address tomorrow.

SENATE
Nothing substantive action out of the Senate today.

HOUSE
This afternoon the House Environment Committee held a subject matter hearing on the Sterigenics facility and ethylene oxide emissions.  This hearing comes off the heels of a motion filed by the state to close down Sterigencis.  There are several bills dealing with the regulation of ethylene oxide.  We expect action on this issue this session.

HB 345 (Lilly) passed out of the House Health Care Availability & Accessibility Committee today 5-1-0.  This bill would increase the minimum purchasing age for tobacco products 21.  The Chamber opposed.

Sister City Cultural Exchange: March 23 - 27, 2019

Since 2010, Marion has been taking part in a Sister City program to provide global connections and exchanges between the international city of Kanie Town, Japan and the residents of Marion, IL.  Regardless of the 6,000 mile distance, this relationship has grown stronger over the years.  Each year, the communities schedule alternating visits to learn about business, education, and cultural differences.

The visiting delegations are made up of leaders and students from each community.  The students stay with host families, enabling them to take in as much culture as possible.

This event would not possible without the support of local organizations.  Join the Marion Chamber, the City of Marion, VisitSI, Aisin, the Pavilion, Senator Fowler, and Representative Severin in supporting this year's event.
