The Children's Hunger Project Expands Local Efforts

David Cohen, Chairman of the Board of Directors of The Children’s Hunger Project announces an aggressive expansion of the local charity’s efforts.

“With the start of the upcoming school year we will provide a package of weekend food for 1,400 elementary school-age kids each Friday,” according to Mr. Cohen.  “These are kids that teachers know are coming to school hungry on Monday mornings.”

The charity, known as “Brevard County’s Backpack Program,” started three years ago when Mr. Cohen joined with Sam Jordan, Jean-Yves Clerc and Bob Barnes to aggressively address the hunger and malnutrition problem in Brevard County.  At that time the percentage of kids perceived to be at risk of hunger in Brevard County was at 40%, over twice the national average.  “The problem,”said Mr. Cohen, “has grown worse locally.  The number of kids at risk is now just under 50%”.

Riviera Elementary School in Palm Bay was the first school in the charity’s program.  Twenty-seven kids were provided a weekend food package.  Since then the number kids served has increased to 1,400 per week and the number of schools being served by The Children’s Hunger Project has grown to 29 with further expansion planned as funding permits.
