Giant sea creatures invade Brevard County

A few weeks ago, a drop-cloth-covered octopus named Octavia was wheeled off a trailer into its new home at Brevard Zoo. As part of Washed Ashore, a temporary exhibit featuring ten larger-than-life sculptures crafted from marine debris, this eight-armed cephalopod and her kin serve as reminders of the very real dangers waste poses to our oceans.

The Washed Ashore Project is a non-profit, community-based organization dedicated to educating and creating awareness about marine debris and plastic pollution through art.

Washed Ashore runs from November 8, 2015 to May 8, 2016 and will be open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily; entry is included with general Zoo admission. The exhibit is presented by Bright House Networks and sponsored by Surfing’s Evolution and Preservation Foundation, PNC, Publix Super Markets Charities and Parrish Medical Center.

Open the Doors and Celebrate Manufacturing!
October 2nd kicks off Manufacturing Month in Florida
October is “Manufacturing Month” in Florida and Brevard County. It is a time to celebrate companies dedicated to this core industry and learn more about modern, high tech manufacturing and innovative technologies.

Companies such as Craig Technologies and Rapid Prototyping Services, LLC opened their doors on Friday, October 2, 2015, known as “Manufacturing Day”.

“Craig Technologies’ philosophy for Manufacturing Day is that manufacturing and ‘Made in the USA’ is a family affair - one with which ALL Americans identify. By opening our doors we were able to highlight our local manufacturing workforce and their families,” stated Carol Craig, chief executive officer of Craig Technologies.

Rapid Prototyping Services, LLC in Satellite Beach had 3D printers on hand and operating. “Manufacturing Day is a great opportunity to show what 3D printers do and hopefully, inspire others. By coming into my business and observing the machines at work, each person walked away with a better understanding of high tech manufacturing,” said Ken Brace president of Rapid Prototyping Services.

You can learn more about manufacturing in Brevard County by visiting the EDC’s Made In Brevard website at www.MadeInBrevardFL.com.

AFTAC, Community School participate in NOBBChE Science Bowl

Master Sgt. Chad Taguba, a physicist with the Air Force Technical Applications Center, pours hot water into a container of liquid nitrogen, creating an enormous water vapor cloud as students from Endeavour Elementary Magnet School look on with glee.  The demonstration was part of an exhibit at the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers’ (NOBBChE) Annual Science Exhibition in Orlando Sept. 25, 2015.  AFTAC sponsored 85 students to attend the conference as part of the center's community outreach program.  (U.S. Air Force photo by Susan A. Two easy options from FPL for lowering energy operating costs
FPL is helping business owners and operators lower their energy costs by educating them on their current energy use and providing them with tips and tricks to cut back. The two programs now accessible online include the Business Energy Evaluation and the Online Business Energy Dashboard.

Businesses can keep track of their usage by logging into their Online Business Energy Dashboard at FPL.com. This smart technology dashboard provides a breakdown of energy use by the month, day and hour. In addition, customers can get a projection of their next month’s bill, historic weather information and more.

With these two options, businesses receive personalized analysis of their usage as well as recommendations for ways to improve energy efficiency. Some of the low- or no-cost measures may be implemented immediately, while others may require more planning. A good energy plan is a good business plan. Visit FPL.com to view your Online Business Energy Dashboard and schedule a free BEE.
