Giraffe calf on public view at Brevard Zoo
Brevard Zoo’s Masai giraffe calf made its first public appearance on Tuesday, charming visitors in Expedition Africa. Born on November 29 to mother Johari, the yet-to-be-named youngster should be in the main yard for a few hours in the late morning and early afternoon each day (subject to change).
Brevard Schools Foundation Receives AT&T Grant
Students at Coquina Elementary School will benefit from a statewide investment by AT&T this year, one that seeks to increase understanding of how classroom curriculum translates into STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) careers. To provide a critical link from classroom to careers, AT&T is once again partnering with the Consortium of Florida Education Foundations (CFEF) to provide experiential learning opportunities for students in school districts across Florida.   Real-world application of STEM education concepts, problem-solving and critical thinking skills will all be key elements of the 47 separate projects to be organized and funded through CFEF member local education foundations, including the Brevard Schools Foundation.

“The AT&T STEM Grants are helping build a pipeline for future careers,” said Janice Kershaw, Executive Director of Brevard Schools Foundation.  “We value industry partners, like AT&T, who want to make a difference in the classroom.”

Coquina’s project, Crime Scene and Forensic Investigations, seeks to promote higher order thinking and reasoning in students as they engage in a project-based learning module centered on forensic investigation. Students will process and analyze evidence from a mock crime scene to determine the culprit in The Case of the Missing School Mascot. Students will be mentored by STEM professionals, including Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, as they become the scientists needed to solve the case by processing a mock crime scene and analyzing data in a simulated crime lab. The project will start December 2015 and end February 2016.
