Brevard Schools Foundation Office Receives 2016 Best of Viera Award
Viera Award Program Honors the Achievement

Brevard Schools Foundation Office has been selected for the 2016 Best of Viera Award in the Foundations category by the Viera Award Program.

Each year, the Viera Award Program identifies companies that we believe have achieved exceptional marketing success in their local community and business category. These are local companies that enhance the positive image of small business through service to their customers and our community. These exceptional companies help make the Viera area a great place to live, work and play.

Various sources of information were gathered and analyzed to choose the winners in each category. The 2016 Viera Award Program focuses on quality, not quantity. Winners are determined based on the information gathered both internally by the Viera Award Program and data provided by third parties.

VNA's "Shoo the Flu" Vaccination Clinics Begin September 13th
Flu season is here, and the Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) is preparing for its annual “Shoo the Flu” vaccination program. Public vaccination clinics begin September 13th and will go until November 19th. The pneumonia shot will also be offered at each VNA clinic. The VNA will offer two types of flu vaccinations:  a preservative-free high-dose vaccine, and a quadrivalent vaccine, which also comes in a preservative-free form. The high-dose vaccine contains four times the amount of antigens and is only for those individuals who are 65 years or older. The quadrivalent vaccine is for individuals 10 years or older and offers broader coverage than the regular flu shot.

'Every Day is Veterans Day' September 16 at King Center
Black Hawk Down's Colonel Danny McKnight will keynote annual event

One Senior Place will present the fourth annual "Every Day is Veterans Day" inside the Studio Theater at the King Center for the Performing Arts, 3865 North Wickham Road in Melbourne, on Friday, September 16 from 10:00 AM through 1:00 PM.  Admission is free.  Co-sponsored by VITAS Healthcare, "Every Day is Veterans Day" will feature a keynote address by the hero of the Battle of Mogadishu, Colonel Danny McKnight.  Colonel McKnight will share highlights from his career, in a presentation about the commitment and leadership skills required to be successful, especially when operating in difficult, adverse, or less-than-perfect conditions. He will include an account of the events of October 3-4, 1993, in Mogadishu, Somalia, which formed the basis for the book Black Hawk Down and the successful Hollywood film of the same name.  Numerous veterans and military organizations will be represented at the event, which will also include a color guard, music, refreshments, door prizes and information for veterans.  A highlight of the event will be the presentation of a Vietnam War 50th Anniversary Commemoration pin, given to all Vietnam Veterans in attendance, or their Gold Star family member.  While an RSVP is not required, attendees are encouraged to call (321) 751-6771 so that organizers can fully accommodate the expected large turnout.  Refreshments will be provided by One Senior Place, the Viera marketplace for senior resources.  For more information about One Senior Place, The Experts in Aging, visit their website at www.OneSeniorPlace.com or call (321) 751-6771.

League of Women Voters of the Space Coast Hosts Timely Topics Luncheon
"THE INNOCENT AT RISK - HUMAN TRAFFICKING"

RSVP by September 17th for League of Women Voters of the Space Coast's Timely Topics Luncheon, "The Innocent at Risk - Human Trafficking" on Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at 11:30 A.M. at the Tradewinds Restaurant at Duran Golf Club, 7032 Stadium Parkway in Viera.

A  panel discussion will enlighten and educate on how rampant Human Trafficking is in the state of Florida, what to look for and how to report this horrendous crime.  Panelists include Assistant State Attorney Julia Lynch, Division Chief of Sex Crimes and Child Abuse Division, 18th Circuit Court, Brevard and Tara Hormell, Executive Director, Children's Home Society, Central Florida and Brevard Divisions.  Most often we think of Human Trafficking as being somewhere else, perhaps another country, not here in America.  The truth is that Human Trafficking is in our states, our cities and towns.  While women and children are the primary targets, men are also victims.

Cost is $22.  RSVP to Doreen Archer at 321-622-4071 or darcher14@cfl.rr.com by September 17th with name, phone number and choice of entrée - Chicken Parmesan with Penne Pasta, Asian Pork Tenderloin with Rice Pilaf or Vegetarian on request.  Beverage, rolls, tossed salad and cookies are included.  Pay at the door with cash or check. Public is invited.
