Odyssey Charter School, Inc. (OCS), celebrates National Healthy Schools Awards

Odyssey Charter Schools, Inc., in Palm Bay, Florida, a system of rigorous, healthy, and holistic schools, has earned two prestigious Gold with Distinction Awards from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Healthier US School Challenge (HUSSC) program. The Gold Award with Distinction is the highest national recognition a school can receive from the USDA and is a first for any school in Brevard County; only a handful of schools in Florida and nationwide have earned this distinctive award since its inception.

Odyssey Charter School Elementary and Odyssey Preparatory Academy, both located in Palm Bay, have earned their place among less than 170 schools across the nation to have ever achieved such recognition. These awards recognize excellence in nutrition and physical activity, two factors proven by research to promote better performance in school, better grades, and better behavior in and out of class.

Pi Beta Phi donates books for low-income students

The Brevard Schools Foundation’s Supply Zone for Teachers will receive a donation of 500 new books from Pi Beta Phi Fraternity for Women.  Pi Beta Phi representatives will distribute these books to teachers on Thursday, April 6th at a special Supply Zone event in recognition of School Library Month.

Across the nation, Pi Beta Phi Collegiate and Alumnae women undertake various initiatives to promote education and literacy through their philanthropic campaign, Read > Lead > Achieve.  Every year in March, 100 Alumnae Clubs are selected to receive 500 books apiece to distribute in their communities.  This is the third year the Brevard County Alumnae Club has been awarded the grant and has selected the Supply Zone as the recipient for the books.  The support from Pi Beta Phi will once again help the Supply Zone get books into the hands of students from low-income households.

Abandoned kangaroo receives care at Brevard Zoo

A tiny red kangaroo abandoned by her mother has another shot at life thanks to the dedication of Brevard Zoo’s animal care team. She is the fifth joey born to five-year-old mother Jacie. The as-yet-unnamed female, who is approximately five months old, was discovered out of Jacie’s pouch on Monday, January 23. She was likely ejected from the pouch due to stress from a storm the night prior. After several unsuccessful attempts to reunite the two, animal care managers made the decision to raise the joey by hand.

“Red kangaroos don’t start emerging from the pouch until they’re about seven months old,” said Michelle Smurl, the Zoo’s director of animal programs. “We think this joey is five months old, so the situation is still very precarious.”

Keepers feed the joey every four hours, day and night, and weigh her once per day.
The Zoo’s kangaroo mob is living behind the scenes and will return for public viewing in late May when the Australasia section of the Zoo reopens as Lands of Change: Australia and Beyond.
