Supplies Needed for Hurricane Refugees in Brevard Public Schools

The Brevard Schools Foundation is accepting donations during the month of November for hurricane refugees in Brevard Public Schools.  Over 125 displaced children from Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, South Florida, and Texas have already entered the school district; this number continues to rise every day.

Items including hygiene products, new underwear and socks, gift cards for food, and school supplies are urgently needed.  Donations can be dropped off at the Supply Zone at Clearlake Education Center, 1225 Clearlake Road, Cocoa through the end of November.  Collected supplies will be packed into backpacks and distributed to all of the hurricane refugees throughout the entire school district.

“These students and their families are facing unbelievable challenges,” said Elizabeth Schreiber, Supply Zone Program Manager.  “Many have had to leave behind the majority of their belongings.  Some are having trouble finding transportation or places to stay.  By providing these pre-packed backpacks with supplies and other necessities, we hope to relieve at least some of their burden.”

For more information on how to get involved with this effort, please contact Elizabeth Schreiber, Supply Zone Program Manager, at 321-633-3660, ext. 301 or Schreiber.elizabeth@brevardschools.org.

Volunteer Board Members Celebrated at Annual Reception

Citizens who serve as volunteer board members were honored for their years of service to the City of Melbourne during the City’s 19th Annual Board Reception, October 17 at the Front Street Civic Center.

The annual board reception provides an opportunity for the Mayor and City Council to recognize volunteer board members for their contributions to the city. “Members give generously with their time and talent, take on leadership roles, and contribute ideas and suggestions to projects and assignments,” said Melbourne Mayor Kathy Meehan. “The city’s hardworking volunteer board members deserve our thanks and gratitude for the invaluable role they play in local government.”

In 2017, approximately 131 members served on 17 committees that guide a range of city services from architectural standards and affordable housing to code enforcement and pension planning. Many of the city’s board members have served for multiple years — even decades.

Wuesthoff Health System Announces Planned Updates to Names and Branding

New facility titles align with regional expansion of innovative Steward care model and physician network

Wuesthoff Health System announced today that they will be updating their hospital names and branding as part of their ongoing integration into the innovative, patient-centered Steward Health Care System.

Steward, a physician-led health company, has created a model of health care focused on patient wellness and preventative care that has been proven to improve outcomes while reducing costs. That model along with Steward’s proprietary patient care technology has fueled the company’s recent expansion to become the largest private provider of hospital services in the United States. The company has simultaneously increased its physician network by more than 500%.

Steward will now officially brand the hospitals as Rockledge Regional Medical Center and Melbourne Regional Medical Center, all of which became Steward family hospitals in May 2017. The new hospital names will reflect the regional expansion of access to the integrated, community based health care model pioneered by Steward – a model that is currently being introduced at the new Steward family hospitals in Florida, which also includes Sebastian River Medical Center.
