Brevard Schools Foundation invites community to show teacher appreciation by filling critical classroom needs

In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, Brevard Schools Foundation is inviting the community to partner with them by helping to raise $5,000 to fund teacher grants up to $250 each. The grants would fund a critical need within K-12 classrooms in Brevard Public Schools.

The donation page will be available online until May 13, 2018 and cash or check donations can either be dropped off at the Brevard Schools Foundation office located at the School Board Building, 2700 Judge Fran Jamieson Way, Viera, or by US mail to the same address.  We ask that all donations be received no later than May 18th to determine how many requests will be able to be funded. 100% of the proceeds raised for this project will go directly to funding teacher grants.

For more information about this challenge, or to donate, please visit www.brevardschoolsfoundation.org or contact Katherine Allen at (321) 633-1000 ext. 474 or via email allen.katherine@brevardschools.org

Keep Brevard Beautiful recognizes Melbourne All Suites Inn with We Noticed Award

Keep Brevard Beautiful’s (KBB) South Action Team presented the "We Noticed" Beautification Award to the newly renovated hotel Melbourne All Suites Inn on April 11.  This unique hotel took a rundown property and transformed the business inside and out.  235 rooms were converted into 99 two-room master suites and 41 junior suites.  The floral elements were manicured around the complex and given new life with additional palms, butterfly-attracting flowers like milkweed, and Florida-friendly plants.  To add a sustainable element, hanging floral baskets are located under each air conditioning unit’s condensation pipe so water is not wasted.  Since reopening the hotel in June last year, the business is currently ranked #3 on TripAdvisor for best valued hotels in Melbourne and recently received the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence.

The South Action Team recognizes property- and business-owners throughout the southern part of Brevard County year-round for their efforts to beautify the area and environmentally improve their landscaping.  The program has been in operation since the 1990’s and has recognized dozens of properties throughout the County.

Florida League of Cities recognizes Mayor Meehan for outstanding advocacy efforts during the 2018 legislative session

The Florida League of Cities recently recognized Mayor Kathy Meehan with a 2018 Home Rule Hero Award. Mayor Meehan earned this prestigious award for her tireless efforts to advance the League’s legislative agenda and help protect the Home Rule powers of Florida’s cities during the 2018 legislative session.

"I am honored to serve the residents and businesses of the City of Melbourne,” Mayor Meehan said.

Home Rule is the ability for a city to address local problems through and by local decision makers with minimal state interference. The Home Rule Hero Award recipients are local government officials – both elected and nonelected – who consistently responded to the League’s request to reach out to members of the legislature and help give a local perspective to an issue.

“These dedicated municipal officials are some of the Florida League of Cities’ biggest advocates for municipal issues,” said Florida League of Cities President Gil Ziffer. “Their efforts during the 2018 legislative session were extraordinary. The League and its legislative team are proud to recognize and thank them for their service.”
