Staff members recognized by Crosswinds Youth Services with annual awards for outstanding service
At its Staff Annual Awards Luncheon, Crosswinds’ President and CEO Jan Lokay recognized staff members for their outstanding achievements in 2018 and their length of service with the nonprofit organization.
Several staff members were honored for their many years of service with Crosswinds, including Youth Care Worker Donna James and Counselor Lawrence McCalla (10 years), and Youth Care Worker Annie Burch (5 years). Ms. Burch also received the Tortoise Award for 2018 for quality and perseverance.

City of Melbourne earns Tree City USA designation for the 30th year in a row
As part of its grand opening, Liberate Physician Centers, a Medical Marijuana Certification Clinic, will have a booth setup outside the Brevard Renaissance Fair at Wickham Park. The dates for the fair are spread across three weekends: January 19-20, 26-27, and February 1-3.
If you're interested in learning more about how to obtain your medical marijuana certification or have any questions about medical marijuana use in Florida, be sure to stop on by!
Terrapin Trot 3k set for February
Runners and walkers of all skill levels are encouraged to race through Brevard Zoo for a “Terrapin Trot” on Saturday, February 9.
Organized by the Running Zone Foundation, the Terrapin Trot 3k will be the 13th annual race held at the Zoo. The events have thus far generated $87,000 for the Zoo’s animal wellness, conservation and education programs.
“We’ve been holding these runs since 2007,” said Michelle Smurl, director of animal programs at the Zoo and a co-organizer of the 3k. “Running Zone does such a wonderful job every year making sure everyone has a great time, regardless of how fast they’re going.”
Participants who can finish in under 20 minutes should opt for the 7 a.m. race, while those who need a little more time can begin at 7:35 a.m. A free “kiddie run” will follow. Registration is available online at www.brevardzoo.org/terrapin-trot or in person at the Zoo from 6 to 6:45 a.m. on the day of the race. All participants receive 50% off Zoo admission on the day of the event (race number required) and the chance to win a $500 Disney gift card.
