Applications Being Accepted for the Beautification and Energy Efficiency Board

The City of Melbourne is accepting applications for a vacancy on the Beautification and Energy Efficiency Board. Specifically, the city is looking for a member with a background in economic development or business, including facilities management and energy efficiency.
 
The seven-member board makes recommendations to the City Council concerning affordable strategies associated with conservation, renewable energy, and energy efficiency. The board is charged with developing an environmental sustainability plan relating to city operations with a goal of achieving 100% clean energy by 2035.
 
Interested applicants should complete an application and submit it to the City Clerk’s Office no later than April 26.

In recognition of their environmental stewardship efforts, seven schools, including Longleaf Elementary, Ocean Breeze Elementary, Roy Allen Elementary, Surfside Elementary, University Park Elementary, West Melbourne School for Science and Melbourne High School have been recognized by the City of Melbourne’s Environmental Community Outreach Division as ECO Schools – an acronym for Environmental Care and Ownership. (Pictured: Surfside Elementary group)

Earth Day celebration returns to Brevard Zoo

Brevard Zoo guests are invited to “Spring into Action” at the Zoo’s annual Party for the Planet on Saturday, April 20 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“Party for the Planet is the Zoo’s way of celebrating Earth Day,” said education programs manager Andrea Aubert. “We invite guests to come learn about sustainable living and conservation, and celebrate our world in a fun, family-friendly way.”

Brevard Backyard Beekeepers, Brevard County Natural Resources, Keep Brevard Beautiful, Recycle Brevard and Sea Turtle Preservation Society will be present with hands-on nature play and science activities. Other festivities include a sea turtle obstacle course, recycling workshops, games, crafts, live music, mangrove adoption, native seed giveaways and the opportunity to create enrichment items for Zoo animals.

All activities are included with Zoo admission. The event is presented by the Zoo’s corporate partners.

 

April is “Water Conservation Month” in the City of Melbourne

The City of Melbourne is joining with other municipalities and the St. Johns River Water Management District in recognizing April as “Water Conservation Month.” Mayor Kathy Meehan issued a proclamation during the March 12 City Council meeting asking all citizens to think about the importance of water conservation and the everyday changes they can make to use less water and extend our water resources into the future.

EDC’s Weatherman Joins Veterans Florida Board of Directors

Weatherman appointed by Florida Senate President to serve on 9-member Board.

Lynda Weatherman, President and CEO of the Economic Development Commission of Florida’s Space Coast (EDC), was appointed to serve on the Veterans Florida Board of Directors by Florida Senate President, Senator Bill Galvano.

Veterans Florida, a 501c(3) corporation, was established by the legislature in 2014 as part of the Florida GI Bill, to serve as an innovative corporation to encourage recently retired or separated military personnel to make Florida their permanent residence. The corporation also works with veterans and the business community to promote the transition, training and hiring of recently retired or separated veterans statewide.
