June 11 City Council Meeting to Be Held at Hilton Melbourne Rialto Place
The June 11, 2019, regular City Council meeting will be held in the Wakefield Ballroom at the Hilton Melbourne Rialto Place, located at 200 Rialto Place in Melbourne.
The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m.
The meeting is being moved due to large expected turnout for the first reading and discussion of an ordinance to rename Airport Boulevard to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Boulevard.
The Government-in-the-Sunshine Manual recommends that when a large turnout is expected, public boards and commissions should take reasonable steps to accommodate the expected public audience, such as moving the meeting to a larger room. During the May 14 meeting (the last time Council discussed renaming a street in Melbourne in honor of Dr. King) attendance exceeded the room capacity of the City Hall Council Chamber, which can hold 215 people. The ballroom area of the Hilton Melbourne Rialto Place can accommodate between 450 and 500 people.
New partnership enhances Brevard Zoo dining options
Brevard Zoo has partnered with Denver-based Service Systems Associates (SSA) to manage the Zoo’s culinary offerings. The Flamingo Café has been transformed into Nourish 321, a stylish venue offering classic twists on old favorites.
In the coming months, the Paws On Pizzeria will be split into two walk-up venues: Slice, serving fresh pizza, and Cones, serving ice cream and other sweet treats.

Parking lot at Strawbridge Avenue and Waverly Place to close
The City of Melbourne has sold the parking lot at the corner of Strawbridge Avenue and Waverly Place behind Meg O’Malley’s restaurant. It is no longer a public parking lot. Construction of the new hotel is expected to begin on that site in June.
Ample public parking is available in the City Hall parking garage, in the lot east of the railroad tracks, and on other lots throughout downtown Melbourne. On-street parking is also available along New Haven Avenue, on intersecting side streets and on the streets around City Hall.
Summer fertilizer ban June 1- Sept. 30th
The summer rainy season ban on fertilizer use in the City of Melbourne goes into effect June 1. The ban lasts until September 30. This regulation was enacted in order to keep harmful nutrients found in fertilizer from washing off lawns into storm drains and ultimately into the Indian River Lagoon during the rainy summer months.
In the summer months, heavy rains wash off any fertilizer applied to lawns and gardens before it can be absorbed by plants and grass. Instead of benefitting the plants, it ends up washing off lawns and ultimately into the Indian River Lagoon where it can fuel algae blooms and kill fish.
Homeowners are reminded that it is also illegal to blow grass clippings into streets or stormwater drains in the City of Melbourne at any time of the year. Instead, clippings should be blown back into yards or composted.
Penalties include a fine of $200 for violating either of these ordinances.
For more information, call the Stormwater Hotline: (321) 608-7341.
