Candlelighters of Brevard's Ladies Night Out Event

Candlelighters of Brevard invites you to groove back into the disco era for the 2019 Ladies Night Out event “Decade of Disco”. This event will be held September 28, 2019 at the Hilton Melbourne Rialto Place.

Candlelighters of Brevard is continuing to grow to meet the needs of families both in Brevard and Indian River counties. They witness the harsh reality of families in our community still being faced with the shattering news that their child has been diagnosed with cancer. Now, more than ever, they need your help in standing together with them.

Coastal Psychiatric Urgent Care, Inc. to open August 1

Coastal Psychiatric Urgent Care, Inc. is changing the way we think about how to get mental health treatment in Brevard County. As a non-profit corporation in Melbourne, FL, they will provide psychiatric treatment and brief therapy on a walk-in basis Monday through Friday 9:00 to 4:00 for individuals who may be experiencing a non-emergency mental health crisis. Care will be offered to insured children, adolescents, adults, and older adults and those who are willing to pay out of pocket. A sliding fee scale is available to those who qualify.

Brevard Schools Foundation leader elected to state role

Janice Kershaw, President/CEO of Brevard Schools Foundation was recently elected as Chair of the Consortium of Florida Education Foundations (CFEF). Kershaw is one of four officers who, along with five statewide local education foundation leaders, govern the CFEF, a membership organization for Florida’s district-wide local education foundations.
 
Kershaw has led the Brevard Schools Foundation since 2010 and brings to the position 25 years’ experience working in the non-profit sector and 10 years serving as an elected member of the Brevard County School Board. Kershaw earned a Bachelor of Arts from DePauw University.

Kershaw began her two-year term as chairman on July 1, 2019.

Established in 1987, the CFEF is the membership organization for the education foundations aligned with Florida’s county-wide school districts. The mission of the Gainesville-based statewide organization is to build the capacity and effectiveness of its members that collectively raise more than $64 million annually to support students, teachers and schools through a variety of programs.

Teens to learn about endangered wildlife at Brevard Zoo event

Central Florida youth are invited to learn about local and international conservation efforts at Brevard Zoo’s eighth annual Youth Environmental Summit on Saturday, July 27 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Organized by members of the Zoo Teen volunteer program for peers ages 12–18, the event features speakers from Florida Wildlife Hospital, Brevard County Parks and Recreation, University of Florida, Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute and other organizations from across the state. Attendees will also participate in hands-on workshops, art projects and interactive panel discussions. The theme, “Animals in Danger,” encompasses topics such as invasive plants and animals; citizen science; art and wildlife protection; sustainable choices to help endangered species; and more.

A $15 participation fee, which includes a pizza lunch and event bag, is required to attend. Registration is open until July 25 at brevardzoo.org/youth-environmental-summit.
