The annual Applauding Brevard’s Champions ceremony, better known as the ABC Awards, will be held on Wednesday, January 29, 2020 at the King Center for Performing Arts in Melbourne.
This beloved event, hosted by the Brevard Schools Foundation, honors the best and brightest teachers and staff of Brevard Public Schools. Categories include Teacher of the Year, Employee of the Year, Administrator of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and Awards of Distinction. Two new categories have been added to this year’s line-up: Rookie Teacher of the Year and Emerging Teacher of the Year.

AARP Foundation is thrilled to partner with Goodwill to offer free tax preparation!
Make an appointment on FRIDAYS between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm during the month of January at the GOODWILL West Melbourne (near the intersection of I-95 and W. New Haven Avenue).
Tax preparation will begin February 3, 2020, Mondays and Fridays, from 9 am to 3 pm. Bring all needed paperwork.
Brevard Zoo appoints new director of facilities
Brevard Zoo’s new director of facilities is no stranger to the institution. Previously serving as the Zoo’s landscaping manager, Dane Dernier was appointed to the position in an interim capacity following the previous director’s departure in September 2019. Dernier was given the official title in early January and now oversees the Zoo’s landscaping, construction and maintenance operations.
Before joining the Zoo team in 2018, Dernier, who is originally from Merritt Island, spent 18 years working at Rockledge Gardens in a multitude of roles, including positions in landscaping, design, sales and purchasing. Dernier is a Florida Nursery, Growers and Landscape Association Certified Horticulture Professional and International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist.
“Having grown up in Brevard County, I’ve been able to see the Zoo grow and transform,” said Dernier. “The way the Zoo connects our community to nature and conservation is one of my favorite things about working here. I love being a part of that.”
Caitlin Rice voted onto Board at Early Learning Coalition of Brevard
Caitlin Rice, founder and CEO of Caitlin Rice PR was voted onto the board of directors at Early Learning Coalition of Brevard at their annual meeting in October as a private sector member.
The Early Learning Coalition of Brevard administers multiple early learning programs including School Readiness (subsidized) child care; Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten (VPK), Child Care Resource and Referral (CCR&R), Florida First Start and Inclusion.
