Sea the Stars to benefit Hubbs Seaworld Research Institute
Sea the Stars Benefit will encompass a night under the stars at Kennedy Space Center. Hubbs will be honoring Women in Science throughout Central Florida, who have dedicated their life's work to finding solutions for a promising future. We will have live music, great food, a silent auction with one of a kind items, reports on marine science findings and will be presenting our prestigious Ocean Champion award to a member of our Brevard marine science community, and the Young Women in Science and Conservation awards to 3 Brevard County students.
Located in Melbourne Beach, HSWRI provides 24-hr stranding response for whales and dolphins in distress along the Indian River Lagoon. We investigate why strandings occur and monitor the success of rehabilitated animals returned to sea. When a stranding occurs in Brevard or Volusia counties, HSWRI scientists are the first responders to provide assistance to live animals and to examine and collect samples from dead animals. HSWRI conducts vital research on samples taken from these animals in order to investigate life-threatening diseases that affect both marine life and humans. This research informs Indian River Lagoon managers of potential actions to conserve bottlenose dolphins and other marine life. Understanding and preventing diminished marine animal health and widespread mortality events among marine mammals, seabirds, fish and sharks are some of our top priorities.

Cousteau to attend Brevard Zoo gala
Brevard Zoo’s annual fundraising event is returning with a world-renowned speaker. Safari Under the Stars, which will take place on Saturday, April 25 from 6 to 11 p.m., is presented by Flammio Financial Group, a private wealth advisory practice of Ameriprise Financial Services, Inc.
This year’s celebrity guest is famed French explorer and environmentalist Jean-Michel Cousteau. Like his father Jacques, Cousteau has devoted his life to educating the world about marine life and inspiring action to protect it. In addition to founding the Ocean Futures Society, Cousteau has earned prestigious awards for the more than 80 films he has produced.
“We could not think of someone better suited to speak at this incredible gala,” said Karen Davis, the Zoo’s director of development. “Jean-Michel’s life’s work aligns wonderfully with our missions of conservation and education.”
Interested organizations and individuals should visit www.brevardzoo.org/safari-under-the-stars or contact Chris Stagman at 321-254-9453, ext. 485 or cstagman@brevardzoo.org for more information.
