About Plumas Wood Fiber
Plumas Wood Fiber
Plumas Wood Fiber was established in early 2022 in response to the devastating wildfires of 2020-21 that burned over two million acres of forest in Northern California. Recognizing the urgent need to mitigate the risk of high-severity wildfires, we are committed to reducing excess biomass in overgrown forests. Our approach is to create a sustainable commercial market for this material, ensuring that the necessary forest thinning and biomass removal efforts are both economically viable and environmentally responsible.
Driven by a sense of urgency and innovation, the Plumas Wood Fiber team—comprised of dedicated local citizens—has introduced a forward-thinking solution: transforming forest biomass into horticultural wood fiber substrate. This eco-friendly alternative to peat moss has gained traction in Europe and other regions but remains largely untapped in Western forests. By repurposing forest waste into a valuable product, we are not only improving forest health and reducing fire hazards but also contributing to a more sustainable future for our communities and ecosystems.
