Mesquite joins alliance to boost Southern Nevada economy

Newly formed group aims for economic growth, announces joint support of Ballot Question 5

LAS VEGAS — In an attempt to become a bigger part of Southern Nevada’s regional economy, the Mesquite Chamber of Commerce joined with six other regional chambers and the Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance on Thursday to form the Council of Chambers, an alliance aimed at increasing economic growth.

The LVGEA announced the group's formation at a morning press conference and used the time to announce unified support of the extension of Fuel Revenue Indexing — the topic of Question 5 on this year’s ballot for Clark County voters.

Mesquite Chamber of Commerce Director Brenda Snell joined Boulder City Chamber of Commerce CEO Jill Rowland-Lagan, Henderson Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Scott Meulrath, Urban Chamber of Commerce President Ken Evans, Asian Chamber of Commerce President Sunny Vinuya, Las Vegas Latin Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Peter Guzman, and LVGEA President and CEO Jonas Peterson in support of Question 5.

“We support Fuel Revenue Indexing because we believe it is a common-sense approach to help build a robust transportation infrastructure throughout Southern Nevada,” Peterson said. Since 2013, Peterson said more than 220 transportation projects in Clark County have been funded using Fuel Revenue Indexing dollars and estimated extending FRI would create 25,000 jobs across the region.

Snell said Mesquite is set to benefit from Question 5.

“It was instrumental in the completion of our new Exit 118 and will be instrumental in further improvements in our roads if we’re going to continue to attract businesses to our area,” she said.

Guzman praised FRI for creating jobs and allowing for economic growth. Muelrath and Rowland-Lagan said FRI dollars helped fund the Interstate 11 project in Southern Nevada. Others said extending FRI will make roads safer.
“Unfortunately, Nevada ranks third in the nation for pedestrian fatalities,” Evans said. “We must vote 'yes' on Question 5 because it will enable us to repair aging roads and put in new traffic lights and stop signs, all of which make our roads safer for drivers, and pedestrians, and tourists alike.”

The extension of FRI is crucial to “keep our roads safe, limit congestion, and fund countless reconstruction projects in Clark County” while also easing the cost to taxpayers, Vinuya said.
“It’s important to note that these funds will stay in Southern Nevada and only cost the average driver pennies a day. When considering the benefit to the entire business community, the pros far exceed the limited tax burden that this will have on motorists,” Vinuya said.
The Council of Chambers signed a joint resolution supporting the extension of Fuel Revenue Indexing until Dec. 31, 2026. The resolution estimates FRI will “fund in excess of $2 billion of needed transportation projects,” in Clark County over the next 10 years.

If continued, FRI would provide Mesquite with $18,472,500 in total funding. Just more than $13 million would go toward maintenance, with $5.4 million for capital improvements.

Peterson and Snell both said Mesquite’s participation in the Council of Chambers will allow the city to become a bigger player in Southern Nevada’s economy.
“Mesquite is an important part of our region and the council creates a platform for an even stronger voice for Mesquite,” Peterson said.

“The Council of Chambers will help Mesquite get more involved and grow with the regional economy. Working together with the council’s other members will help us better share information and plan for our future,” Snell said.
