The Mora Valley Chamber of Commerce has about 60 business members and a dozen individual members. The Mora Valley Chamber is not exactly like other Chambers. We are a combination of business development advocate, local "boosterism", and a community service organization. Being the only business oriented group in Mora County, we are usually the point of contact on economic development activities. We take the lead in advertising Mora activities in hopes that some of the thousands of "drive thru" tourists will stop for a few minutes and patronize local business. We take on some projects that normally would be done by organizations, such as the Rotary Club for example, in other communities. Some of our most significant activities are:Business Directory: In June, 2009, La Jicarita Telephone Cooperative and the Chamber jointly distributed the first Mora County telephone book and business directory listing businesses in Mora or doing business in Mora. The directory, particularly the business section, is a very useful reference for Mora residents who support local Mora businesses. Some of the cost of the Directory came from the Chamber's 2008-2009 grant from the Department of Economic Development. We will publish a 2010 issue again in June.
Clean-Up Mora County Day: In 2009, the Chamber organized the first "Clean-Up Mora County Day" with a focus on picking up highway litter. With the help of about 120 volunteers, many who were part of the "Adopt a Highway" program, the New Mexico Department of Transportation, and several local businesses who donated funds to help with a lunch for the workers, we cleaned up over 20 miles of roads and picked up over seven tons of trash. We anticipate organizing another clean-up day next year, most likely on Saturday, April 24, in conjunction with Earth day, 2010.
"Boosting" Local Pride/Local Events: The Chamber does a variety of things to boost pride in Mora and awareness of local events. In 2008, we bought 48 streetlight banners for hanging on the downtown Mora streetlight poles. In 2009, we bought 12 banners each to advertise Fiestas, Mill Fest, and Winter Fest. By changing the dates these banners should be useful for many years. We also help local groups advertise their event. For example, In 2010, we plan on having a Mora section in each of Taos, Angel Fire, and Las Vegas newspapers summer visitors guides which will feature Mora summer events such as Fiestas, Mill Fest, the Antique Car and Hot Rod Show, and Wagon Mound's Bean Day.
