HR NOW Council Corner!

There is an old saying out there that “you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink”.

Typically, most business owners and their managers are so wrapped up with their day to day schedule that it leaves them little time to work on the items that get pushed to the back burner.  We all tend to think “I’ll get to that later” or “it is not urgent now, so why worry about it at all”.

Human Resources often is like that.  Even established companies that have downsized over the years, have one person trying to wear too many HR-related hats that sooner or later, something falls through the cracks.  Whether that “something” is a mistake on an employee’s paycheck or an accidental violation of a newly changed regulation, failure to keep track of personnel-related issues can prove costly.

The Chamber Partnership’s HR NOW platform is designed to help our members with questions and provide resources that help you navigate the HR landscaping, which is continuously changing.  Why not take advantage of The Chamber Partnership’s HR NOW program and let the HR Council be a resource for you and your organization.

For more information or to find out how we can help, please feel free to e-mail the HR Council at ckoch@hrsystems.cc with any questions or set a time to get together to learn more about this great Chamber benefit.

Best Regards,

Tips for Networking Success!!

Network for Success

Summer parties make great networking opportunities. Relaxed and festive, they’re ideal for stepping forward and shining.

Identify people you’d like to meet. Find out about them in advance. Use this information to break the ice and make authentic connections. Don’t whip out your product, sales pitch or brochure. Create bonds and build trust, paving the way for solid relationships.

You can destroy your career or give it a boost. Here’s how to get noticed for the right reasons:

The approach. Get up and mingle! Smile and shake hands firmly. This demonstrates you are comfortable interacting with others. Find a common bond. If the person serves on the board of directors of a not-for-profit organization, express your interest in the organization—and perhaps in volunteering.

Be prepared. Focus on the other person, rather than on yourself. Don’t come on too strong, but prepare a two-minute pitch about yourself and your business, just in case you are asked.

Meet the movers and shakers. Choose successful decision makers, those who make things happen—and from whom you can learn.

Find a way to help. Be perceived as a resource. Act as a networking referral or information source. It’s easier to ask for help from people who already appreciate your help.

Dress for success.  Dress to represent who you are in your business. Avoid wild or revealing attire. You will do your best networking when you feel well-dressed.

Follow Up. Smart networking means following up to maintain new connections. Gather others’ business cards rather than handing yours out. Make notes on the back and send emails to further connect with them within a day or two.

Alcohol. It can mean ruin. Stick with sparkling water or one drink only. Reputations and careers can implode “under the influence.”

Make meaningful connections this summer to further your business goals!

Take Advantage of the Chamber ProComp Program!

In our efforts to contain Ohio workers’ compensation rates for our members, we have found that membership in a group rating program is the most cost effective route to pursue.  As a current chamber member, you would have no additional association dues to pay for participation into our chamber sponsored group plan.

We recommend the services of ProComp Risk Advisors for placement of your company in the proper BWC certified group rating program.  They are a locally owned TPA and we are confident they will fulfill any of your workers’ compensation concerns in a professional and responsive manner.

Enclosed is a temporary authorization form which must be completed and returned to ProComp Risk Advisors to receive a no cost/no obligation analysis of your projected savings in the group plan.  You may then compare the findings of our study with those of your current group plan and select the program which generates your company the greatest savings.  Remember, there is no cost or obligation to participate in the study.  I urge you to take a few minutes and complete the form.

If you have any questions, please direct your inquires directly to the ProComp group rating department at (419) 724-2667.

Seven rules for facing
addiction in the workplace

Untreated drug addiction costs U.S. businesses $102 billion in lost productivity and profits annually, according to the National Mental Health Association.

The majority of those costs come not from treating alcoholism and drug addiction, but from the indirect costs of not treating them — health care bills for on-the-job injuries, absenteeism, workers compensation, disability claims and loss of productivity.

The hard facts from Minnesota’s Hazelden Foundation are that one in 10 employees has a drinking problem, and almost a third of these drinkers use illicit drugs. These are not somebody else’s employees; these are your employees. And although drug addiction is their problem, at the end of the day it’s your company.

The most successful business owners recognize that addiction affects nearly every company, and boldly take steps to manage that risk. Here are seven cost-effective rules every Minnesota business can follow to understand, intervene, treat and return employees struggling with addictions to the workplace.

Educate your workforce about addiction and treatment.
Enact an ongoing, monthly addiction education program for all employees, from managers to rank-and-file. Address the risks — such as accidents, theft and loss of productivity — surrounding drug abuse, both on and off the job.

Educational programs that focus on reducing the stigma of drug and alcohol-related problems help clear the way for treatment of employees who otherwise would fear accessing treatment when they desperately need it.

Promote company use of employee assistance programs.
An Employee Assistance Program (EAP) can provide training for supervisors, addiction awareness programs, confidential assessment and screening for employees, access to substance abuse treatment, and help returning to work for those in recovery.

Yet many employees believe that if they approach their company’s EAP for help or attempt to access treatment through their health plan, their employer will find out about their drug problem and their career will be jeopardized. It’s an employer’s responsibility to educate employees about the availability, benefits and confidentiality of the process.
