DON'T TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER! (06/08/11)
It's time to stop listening to the negative voices in our heads that stop us from achieving our goals! Recently I turned 40, and was suffering from a nagging shoulder injury and severe sciatic / low back pain. I felt myself giving in to the "I'm getting older, this pain is never going to go away, I'll just rest and stop training, I'll never look like I did ten years ago" voice in my head. Then I realized, how can I train people and motivate them to get fit and healthy if I can't motivate myself? So I decided to practice what I preach and put down the Ben & Jerry's mint chocolate cookie ice cream and the remote and get back on track! I took my "before" picture on April 30th 2011 and started my new workout and meal plan on May 1, 2011. There have been some challenges along the way and I am not going to tell you it was easy to give up certain foods; but I stuck to the plan, enjoyed my "cheat meals" (yes that was plural, I had more than one cheat meal) and started to feel better. This feeling of not having a bloated feeling in my stomach and having more energy and just being in a better mood motivated me to stick to it. Then before I knew it 5 weeks had gone by and after a day of enjoying the nice weather in Sedona I came home to upload the pictures from that day. What did I see????
I got my abs back! I was so excited! and I want to share it with you. Change is hard, saying no to your favorite snack is hard, getting up off the couch to make it to a training appointment is hard. But nobody said life was always going to be easy, but hard work and dedication can be VERY rewarding.
Bodies By Mike Personal Training will help you reach your goals. You don't have to have abs, that was my personal goal; maybe you just want to feel better walking up stairs, or to feel stronger after an injury, or you just want to fit into your pre-baby jeans. Whatever your goals are, we will give you customized - personalized attention that you deserve. We are not a 'big box' gym who will make you sign up for a year of personal training or sign a contract. We are a family run, no pressure, no contract, no minimum commitment private personal training business. Whether you come 3 times a week or 3 times a year, we care about your results.

Once Halloween is over, I then swear off candy for life and move on to dreaming about turkey, green bean casserole and pumpkin pie…..I start craving bigger meals and start getting in the mood to bake things. Next thing you know I have made a pumpkin ginger cheesecake, peanut butter blossoms and have become addicted to mashed potatoes and stuffing!
Ok, ok…Thanksgiving is over. NOW I will get back on track and starting on Monday I will kick my workouts up a notch and eat perfectly all week. But there is so much to do to get ready for Christmas! And with this time of year comes my cravings for Starbucks Peppermint Mocha lattes. When out Christmas shopping, having one of these to get me in the spirit is a MUST! Then there are holiday parties, people bringing in cookies and treats to work, rushing around taking care of errands and decorating and last minute projects with the kids school, the list goes on and on!
Ok, Christmas is over, NOW I will get back on track….but the kids are still on vacation, and it’s almost New Years eve which will involve eating lots of Chinese food or Buffalo wings and of course dessert so I will just wait until the first of the year to get back on track……
I think almost everyone goes through this. Life can come at you fast and if you are not prepared you will become so overwhelmed with it all, you will convince yourself that the McDonalds drive through is your best friend! But don’t be fooled, it is in no way your friend. Yes it can seem daunting to have to cook a meal every night for your family, or to pack a lunch to bring with you to work so you can avoid the vending machine and eating out. But with a little preparation, plucky stick-to-itiveness and help from your friends at Bodies By Mike Personal Training; you can make quality changes to your fitness and nutrition routine that are easier than you think!

After the birth of my second child I had gained almost 50 lbs. I really wanted to loose the baby weight, but left to my own devices I was going nowhere fast. I first came to Mike Westerling when I was a skinny 16 year old trying to make the Varsity football and wrestling teams. Mike taught me that desire is only half the battle. I needed to channel my energy into exercises that would leave me healthy and stronger. While I watched others quickly burn out and over train on other routines, I was stronger every week. Mike taught me that the secret to success is persistence and attention to detail. Before I knew it, I was defensive player of the year in football. In Wrestling, I was seeded first at every tournament my senior year and was selected as a Metrowest and Dual County League All Star. After playing two Varsity Division 2 sports in College, Mike coached me in Strongman. Before Mike left for Arizona, he was able to train me for one last contest. The result of that contest: First place and selected best athlete, sweeping every event.

I would highly recommend Mike Westerling to anyone regardless of age, gender, level of fitness, etc. Mike has helped so many people achieve their fitness goals. Personally, Mike trained me for over 6 years, and with his guidance I competed in the New England Body Building Championship twice. Mike laid out a plan for my diet, cardiovascular training, and my weight training. In a 16 week period I lost 40lbs and got in the best shape of my life.
Mike has a rare ability to truly adapt a training regime to each individual and their unique needs. I have endured countless workouts with Mike that pushed me to near exhaustion, however in the process I attained new levels of both limit and endurance strength. 10 years ago I fell off a roof and was paralyzed from the waist down. I started training with Mike after my initial rehab to try and strengthen my upper body to make it easier to get around in my wheel chair. Although being in a wheel chair will never be easy I have no problem pulling my chair up into my pickup truck or dragging myself up a ladder to check on my guys on the roof.

Mike had been my trainer and friend for 7 years. To give you a little info on me, I played competitive soccer though out high school and college. I have had 4 knee surgery’s and one back surgery from the sport. My most recent surgery being my back. Due to my injuries, I had to find an extremely experienced trainer.
I have worked with several other trainers and they were rarely accommodating, offering fixed training programs that did not take my injuries into account. Mike by far has been the most experienced and knowledgeable trainer. Mike took the time to make a custom training program so that I would not further damage my back or knee. This may not sound like a lot but when you have different aches or pains from day to day Mike would make adjustments in my workouts to address these issues. He would monitor how my workout was progressing and make adjustments right then and there to give me a superior workout. Motivationally he kept me going as well, he was honest about any weakness and genuinely pleased when I pushed myself or reached a new level. There were many times I went to the gym with very little motivation to workout. He encouraged me to push harder and strive to do better. He has a quality about him that made me want to try harder and do one more rep or stay on the treadmill one minute longer. I could never quit with him. Mike was also extremely accommodating. I live a very busy lifestyle so I don’t always know when I could workout or for how long. Mike would never have a problem switching my sessions to a different day or time if needed. In conclusion, I am saddened to see Mike move away because I am loosing a good friend and a great trainer. I strongly suggest training with Mike, he will devote the time and effort into making you an all around healthier happier individual.

Mike Westerling was my personal trainer for almost four years – he was also my first professional trainer. I trained with Mike for a year before he moved to Arizona. Mike provided me with exercises designed to work multiple muscle groups together to improve my strength and endurance in activities I pursue, such as mountain biking, road biking, running, hiking, and cross country skiing. Over the year, I noticed a big improvement in my strength, agility, and endurance when engaged in my outdoor activities. I also noticed a big improvement in muscle tone and definition. Other people also noticed my increased athletic capacity and my body definition. Some of my friends began training with Mike as a result of my improved performance. I have noticed big fitness gains in my friends that trained with Mike, and I have also noticed improvements in their body definition and muscle tone. Another benefit of training with Mike is that the exercise routines lend themselves to being performed on my own and I continue to use many of the exercises learned from Mike as part of my current workout routines. –
Another aspect of Mike’s training is rehab from injuries or surgery. While training with Mike I had two surgeries. The first was shoulder surgery to repair an impingement in the shoulder joint and the second surgery was to relieve a pinched nerve in my elbow. Once the doctor gave me the go ahead to begin rehab, Mike tailored exercises to strengthen the recovering muscles. In both cases, Mike came up with programs that both worked me through the necessary range of motion and that incorporated strength training. The strength training started with light weights and increased in weight and repetitions as pain and mobility allowed. After both surgeries my doctor couldn’t believe the speed with which I rehabbed. In fact he commented that he has never seen a patient recover so quickly back to full strength and activity after surgeries as he did with me. Mike was a big part of both recoveries. I did my part in doing the exercises and Mike did his part in monitoring my progress and giving me a wide range of exercises that worked my joints and muscles in a variety of ways.

I had the priveledge of being trained by Mike for a professional mixed martial arts match. Mike is one of the most knowledgeable and passionate people I have met in all of my years as a competitive athlete. Mike can adapt to anyone whether they are a person just looking to get into shape or a professional athlete looking to compete for a living. Hi! Welcome to Bodies By Mike Personal Training. My name is Mike Westerling and I have literally spent my entire life chasing down the secrets the best bodybuilders, powerlifters, strongmen, athletes and coaches use to achieve the physical ability and development the average gym rat can only dream of! More importantly I have developed a system for using the secrets on “regular people” to help them achieve results they didn’t believe possible!
My wife Jolene and I, along with our friend Jason are taking Bodies By Mike and moving to a new opportunity! We will soon be CrossFit Surprise located in the Fry's Marketplace on Cotton / Greenway in Surprise Az. The build out is making progress and we hope to be open this December. What is CrossFit you ask?
CrossFit Surprise is a coaching facility, not a typical gym that you walk into and use on your own. Every time you come in you will have supervised coaching in a group setting from one of our CrossFit certified coaches.

We use functional training and a variety of implements to help you turn your body and mind into a highly functional and efficient machine.
